Caroline "Tula" Cossey was born with male genitalia but went on to become a beautiful woman with a successful modeling career.

My Story is Tula's candid thought-provoking, enlightening, humorous, heart wrenching, and motivational account of her struggles: her troubled childhood being bullied and taunted in East Anglia, her dreams of becoming a woman, the operations that liberated her sexually, and the journey from showgirl to James Bond girl to top international model.

At the height of her career, Tula had appeared in Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Harper's Bazaar, and graced the covers of many top fashion and beauty magazines and calendars around the world. She was also the first transgendered model to appear in Playboy magazine and was featured on the cover of multiple international editions.

After she was twice exposed by the News of the World, Tula's career plummeted and her marriage to multi-millionaire Elias Fattal was annulled. In the spring of 1989, she was forced to make a unique appeal to the European Commission of Human Rights: she was fighting for the legal validation of her marriage as a female and the right to have her birth certificate amended after gender reassignment surgery.

Her activism led to appearances on numerous television and radio shows with people such as Phil Donahue, Joan Rivers, Howard Stern, Geraldo Rivera, Montel Williams, Maury Povich, Arsenio Hall, Neal Boortz, David Frost, Gloria Hunniford, and Jonathan Ross. She has also often been featured on Entertainment Tonight, had a day named after her in Atlanta, Georgia, and was given the key to the city.

My Story is not just the true account of Tula's battle for the body she needed to survive and her struggle for the legal rights she deserved as a woman. It's above all an inspirational exemplification of the triumph of the human spirit over seemingly insurmountable adversity and suffering.

Written as so many such books are in the first person, unlike most in this genre, it reads fresh, if a little one-sided. Most distinguishing however is that Caroline is a famously beautiful woman, who, as a model much in demand need never have told anyone she had been born a boy. Had she not been forced by wretched journalistic cruelty to reveal the most intimate details about her private and until then quite successful life, we might never have thought her life worthy of a book. Now, we can be glad perhaps that we are able to gain an insight into her world.Caroline attempts to relate as honestly as she can a story which is at times incredible, and possibly horrifying to some. Throughout we find evidence of her hope and great belief in her basic right to live a normal life. This is a freedom which only now, thanks largely to her efforts, is beginning to be recognised in most civilised countries. Caroline is in many ways an unwilling champion of the rights of people who find themselves in a similar situation to herself. Part of the fascination I felt in reading her story was that such an obviously beautiful and talented person could have had such strength to recover from bitterness and defeat to press on and retain her dignity. What was done to her by the English gutter press would have driven many to suicide. Her gripping trials make inspirational reading for those who may be likewise afflicted and look to her for hope for themselves. For others, her book serves as a testiment to the power of determination against formidable odds. Caroline deserves our utmost respect, indeed, our admiration.

Another reader from Canada By A Customer I too, like the other reader from Canada would love to e-mail Caroline to tell her how grateful I am for her gripping life story. I too, have followed a similar path as her and was moved to tears when I read of her failed message. I originally purchased her first book, Tula: I am a Woman in the 1980's and was very familiar with her life, but "My Story" really brought home how difficult it is for us transexuals to live our lives and be accepted as human beings and not some kind of circus freaks. Thank you Tula for bringing home dignity to our cause. Thank you.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. My Story a wonderful and insightful true story By Diane Sutton Caroline has done nothing less than a superb job in telling of her story and the may hardships and adventures. Her ability to convey these events as they took place is a very heart warming tale of her journey through a very difficult situation that some of us must make in our lives. Her hardships are tempered with those of happy days where she had found many friends. Her vivid descriptions of the heataches is telling of the tribulations she has endured. Her loves and tragic losses are given in such a way that the reader feels her pain as well as her joys. She now lives in the U.S.A. somewhere near Atlanta. But her life has and continues to bring many of us warmth and hope through her books. This is one book that I have enjoyed reading and will always cherish my entire life. I only wish I had transitioned as early as her and had known this beautiful woman. Like so many I would love her to autograph the book.

I felt like it was repeating things By AJ I heard that a student at the college I go to wrote a book, so my interest was peaked. Little did I know that it was word vomit in a digital format. Books are supposed to feel calming while also intriguing. This book was neither of those things. I always give a book a chance and read up to the 2nd chapter or so to see if it gets better. I felt like it was repeating things over and over again. So in short no, it didn't get better over time. It got so much worse. This is book is basically "The House that Hustle Built" in a lacidazical unintelligible format.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A great series! By A Customer The writing in this series just gets better! The characters are feisty and funny! . Meg and Sarah are a couple to be reckoned with and even the secondary characters are interesting. Do yourself a favour and read this series. I just hope we do not have to wait another two years for the next book. This series is a rival to J.M. Redman and Jaye Maiman for great lead characters.

12 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Darcy and Lindstrom just get better....... By Bobbrun ....as do the authors of this series. I enjoyed this book so much that I dug out the first two books of the series to reread. Meg and Sarah are the perfect foils for each other. If you haven't read any of this series yet, start with "Cemetery Murders" and work your way through. They are worth reading.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another winner By A Customer This series just keeps getting better and better! And I do hope it continues. The relationship between Meg and Sarah is engaging and realistic. The mystery becomes secondary to me when these two are together. Meg's niece makes for a nice character to play off of, as does Patrick again. But nothing beats Darcy and Lindstrom!

By Blue-eyed Girl I'm torn on whether to give this book three or four stars. The start was brilliant, some really nice writing and a good use of the first person perspective. But I thought it lost its way in the middle part of the book, dragging out endlessly a mystery that ultimately didn't feel that spectacular. I'm not sure, perhaps my expectations were simply too high after seeing all the rave reviews here, which prompted me to buy it.I felt like the pacing was uneven and there were some things that grossed me out - the main character's constant messy eating, which for some reason was heavily emphasized. For a long time it felt like we were just following the main character around between pork sandwiches! And the flatulence of one of her friends. There were scenes that didn't seem to go anywhere such as Paige's introduction to Emily and a church date that never happened. I guess I misread that and it was never meant to actually happen?Ultimately I didn't like the love interest, Jess. For a long time I thought we were building up to something sinister with her, but in the end if felt like she had trivial justifications for misleading Paige and blocking one of her friends from communicating with her. Why was Paige willing to so easily move on from this deceptive behavior? The author has serious skills though, and I'm interested to see what she writes next.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. If I could send Marionette back through time into my teenage self's hands I would! By Angie E. "Reading always gave me comfort. It was a way to get away from me," so says our main character, Paige Alexander, someone I have a feeling I'd enjoy knowing in real life.I can't remember the last time I read a novel that set such a distinct mood and got under my skin, leaving me thinking long after I finished it. This is something that takes a while to read...because it's so good you don't want to rush it and there's so much to take in: family issues, suicide, college life and even some mystery. As I do a lot when I read, I jotted down notes and quotes and found myself wishing I had had books like this to read when I was a teenager. At one point our main character thinks with frustration and pain that her friend's boyfriend Wesley (most appropriately nicknamed "Weasel") is always flirting with other women and treating them badly, yet society thinks she (as a lesbian) is the "the freak, the outcast, the downfall of society."Throughout the novel, T.B. Markinson merges strong atmosphere with riveting plot and very likable characters you grow to care for deeply. She also pulls off the rare feat of making observations about society, life and human beings without sounding preachy or taking away from the storyline. ("I don't hate men. I'm just gay. I can't explain why.")Marionette is painfully funny at times ("I wish idiots would recognize they're idiots") and starkly sincere (Paige is facing more than any one person should have to face at her age and the interactions with her counselor Liddy are convincingly awkward, then, later, emotionally moving). The way the author captures the young adult voice is simply amazing. The secondary characters are not only important and complementary to all that happens, they become part of a group that proves that unrelated people can come together and form a family tighter than any blood ties.Marionette pleases in every way that you would want a book to please you and it takes a serious topic (suicide) and it gives it the care, attention and thoughtfulness it deserves. I wasn't counting on there being a rather significant suspenseful element, which in less capable hands could have been a huge detractor from everything else.Another big plus for me is how Paige's relationship with her girlfriend Jess is presented. So much fiction with lesbian themes places way too much emphasis on the physical aspects of romance. Here, Markinson pretty much draws the curtains closed on that part of life. What Paige and Jess share becomes all the more sweeter and more tender because so much of their relationship revolves around mutual love, understanding and compassion. They are happy in the bedroom, but that's not what makes their connection work, that's secondary to how they are always there for each other and just connect.Marionette is something I will definitely be keeping on my Kindle and reading again. It also makes me want to go back and read T.B. Markinson's first book A Woman Lost. I will be eagerly on the lookout for her next novel.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Gripping, Heart-wrenching YA Journey of Discovery By H.G. Estok I don't read a lot of YA, but one thing I've noticed in the good ones (like HUNGER GAMES) is a gripping first-person narrative. Paige's voice in MARIONETTE is incredible, drawing in the reader from the first page. Markinson excels as consistently telling Paige's story in the voice of an endearing yet troubled 17-year-old, from start to finish. Hailing from a dysfunctional family myself, I found a lot to relate to in Paige's angst. The overall story could have been shorter, but the characters are real, the dialogue is lifelike, and the prose is well-executed -- definitely one of the better self-published titles I've read to date.
