2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Still very dark, still very unique in the lesfic genre By Gaëlle Cathy Wow, I am in awe of the work the author has put in so little time. I have read an early version of that story no later than June. Can't say I very much liked it. The author has stripped it to its core and took a completely different turn with the storyline, which wasn't a bad one to begin with. But now she's turned it into an excellent one with her re-write. I have really enjoyed this final version. Still very dark, still very unique in the lesfic genre. This novel isn't really even being gay or straight or even about the 'relationship' between Lee and Ruby. It was about those two women meeting and just wanting something better in life than what they've had to put up with for so many years. And so they run away toward freedom.... But just like their misery in life was very different, their freedom will come, too, in very different ways... Wouldn't mind reading what happens next....

A Transgressive Road Trip Story By Dharma Kelleher Lee Barstein and her best friend Josie are living on the fringes of society, doing whatever they can to survive in the urban jungle. When a drug deal goes bad, Lee and Josie find themselves on the run from the dealer’s deadly enforcers.As they attempt to flee, Josie is hit by a car driven by Ruby Isles, the abused wife of a wealthy and powerful business man. Lee takes Ruby hostage at gunpoint and they begin a cross-country road trip, hoping to escape their violent pasts.Meanwhile Harry Thresher, a female detective, is in pursuit with the intention rescuing Ruby from her kidnapper. But Thresher isn’t the only one tracking them."Maladaptation" is a refreshingly different story featuring gay characters in a dark and gritty world. The story doesn’t focus on the character’s sexual orientation, but on all of the other things that make these people interesting.At times it reminded me of a mashup of “Bandits” and “Thelma and Louise”, but with a darker, more transgressive edge.I would love to have seen some of the characters more fully developed and there are some distracting typos. But these flaws are overshadowed by the rich universe that author Adan Ramie creates, which is why I gave it four stars.
