By Mspraise1 My Review of Empty by Stacy DeanneI have known this author for a while and have even brought a book of hers recently which I have not yet read. An opportunity presented itself to read an advance reading copy of her latest book. I volunteered to review this book and give an honest review.Where do I start? I had assumed from the blurb of the book that this was a story about a younger man and an older woman and the barriers they would need to overcome in order to make their relationship work and get their happy ever after. Well this story is soooo much more than that to me!!This is Bella and Cameron's story.Bella is Cameron's professor, she is older than him by 20 plus years, she is black and he is white. Well that would be enough to work through in any relationship.Bella is attracted to Cameron but she fights this because she feels it is inappropriate and unprofessional for her to get involved with one of her students.Cameron is in love with Bella and as far as he is concerned love is all that matters. Their love for each other should be able to conquer all the obstacles to their being together. What I love about Cameron is that he is so single minded in trying to get Bella to submit to her feelings for him and to giving their relationship a chance. He tries to reason with her about all the roadblocks she is putting up in order not to surrender to her feelings for him. I loved the fact that he was not afraid to show her his emotional side, he let her see the pain her refusal to acknowledge their love for each other, was doing to him.This story had me from the first page (exactly how I love my stories). It had tragedy, heartache, loss, addictions, regret, love, forgiveness, death, real life realities that affect us all. This was an emotional roller-coaster of a story.The story was so thought provoking it had me looking at relationships and all the internal baggage we bring to them. Never mind the external issues of race and age, what about childhood issues of abandonment, neglect , parental/family issues that continue to affect us in adulthood. We bring these internal problems into our relationships as well. This book was so much more than a story about an older woman and a younger man dealing with the age difference in their relationship. This was a story about all relationships, if they are worth fighting for. Dealing with all the emotional baggage we all bring to our relationships and how we need to work through these, sometimes very difficult and painful situations, to arrive at our happy ever after!For me this story represented working through all sorts of relational matters to arrive at a mature and long lasting relationship and that love truly can conquer all, if we are willing to face the realities of what love can bring into our lives.Although this is a short story it was so fulfilling. I would rather read a short story like this, that speaks to me on several different levels than read a book of over 200 pages plus but did not move me like this short story did.This is a fantastic read. I would recommend this book because it will speak to everyone who believes in real life overcoming love!Congratulations Miss Deanne in writing such a very powerful story. I wish this book much success!

By postcrdprincess I came across this book while scrolling through Amazon and decided to read it because of the storyline of the book: "A 45 year old college professor falls for her 24 year old college student." I wanted to find out what possibly could have drawn these two together, and the fact it was an interracial romance was even better.The book is a short story so I realize that it is hard to get to know everything about the main characters, and even harder to feel the complete chemistry between the hero and the heroine. However, in this story I was able to really feel the heroine (Bella). We see the guilt she has over her deceased husband (no spoiler here), we see the problems that she is having with her young adult son (again no spoilers here), and we also get to feel her concerns about her feelings with the hero (Cameron). The problem I had was I didn't get to completely feel the hero. We got a glimpse into some issues that he had with his childhood, but we really don't get to feel and understand why he is so in love with Bella his professor. Because of this I was not able to truly feel the chemistry between Bella and Cameron.If the story had been expanded so you could see a more in depth view of the relationship I think it would have been more than an "Okay" read to me.

By KimGM The idea of opposites being attracted to one another is one of the reasons why I've always been a fan (and a writer) of interracial/multicultural fiction. Peeling away the superficial layers of what makes us different until we find the commonalities is what makes life and love so interesting. Stacy-Deanne is one of those writers who excels at taking on this topic.In her latest publication, Empty, not only does she look at racial differences, she also tackles age differences, societal norms and the consequences of what could be an illicit relationship. And the story that she spins from it gives you pause and forces you to think about friendship, love, emotional baggage from the past and its consequences. And it makes for a page-turning read.The focus of Empty is on Bella and Cameron and their mutual attraction. Bella is a professor at Elrod University. In her mid-forties, she knows that embarking on a relationship with a student will not only be frowned upon, it would be grounds for her losing her position. She's having a hard time denying the feelings she has for her twenty-something student. Cameron feels the attraction just as much as Bella but, unlike her, he's willing to take the risk to be near her.But don't dismiss Empty as a simply May-December sexual attraction story--there is more to this than meets the eye. As the story progresses, we come to learn more about both Bella and Cameron and how the past has shaped them into the people they've become. We learn how Bella's painful past has led her into a life devoid of love and of happiness. The put-together facade she relies on hides a multitude of sorrow and guilt and soon the story begins to flourish into a tale of finding love and forgiveness.Don't let the fast pace at the beginning of the book put you off--by chapter three you'll be hooked and you'll appreciate how quickly you come to know and empathize with Bella and Cameron and their circumstances. The story flows so well and the characterization is spot on. I only wish the story could have gone on a little longer--but then, that's always the case with any good book. It's never long enough. :)Bravo to Stacy-Deanne for taking on the sort of story we don't often get to read about in the IR/MC genre. I don’t mean to be dismissive, not in the least. It is little in that there are no major wars and no great geographical sweep. It is an intimate story about a young man becoming himself, and it is closely observed and written to the point where it feels as real as a memoir. Reading this book, as was the case with the preceding two, took me decades back in time, to my own university years. In this way the books have evolved from a sort of Young Adult coming out story into a New Adult taking on the world story. In all three books there is a deep emotional resonance that should touch the heart of anyone who remembers what it was to be starting out in the world as a gay man.Here is the Kieran we’ve known since high school (called college on this other planet known at the U. K.). Although living in London, Kieran is still in touch with his parents, his friends Grace, Hannah and Kev. He has some new university friends, all Americans. There’s the smart and approachable Janice, and the two Sarahs, relentless party girls doing their London university thing. I have to say, the characterization of the Americans is sort of horribly spot on. It is very affectionate, but makes me rather squirm to recognize my national character this way.But at the core of this gently harrowing story is Jo, the witty, sparkling and seemingly devoted boy who helped Kieran come out and make his way into the gay world of late 20th-century Salisbury, England. Having been to Australia with Kieran and his family, Jo has moved to London to attend drama school. For all the intensity of their relationship, Jo seems oddly absent in Kieran’s life, caught up in his own studies at the other end of the city.The action, such as there is, is triggered by two events: a thoughtless prank engineered by Jo that opens a Pandora ’s Box of doubting hurt in Kieran’s mind; and a shocking tragedy that leaves Kieran adrift and broken and in desperate need of the friend Jo no longer seems to be. The results are hardly earth shaking, but upsetting enough in their own way because the reader can see that there might have been an alternative story if Jo was a different sort of person.The narrator’s voice comes from a decade in the future – i.e. the present – and he guides us through Kieran’s emotional odyssey, which, for all its smallness, is surprisingly distressing. It is a reminder that seemingly trivial things can alter an individual’s experience, make his journey more difficult and more painful than it might have been otherwise. Kieran doesn’t suffer anything that many new twenty-somethings don’t go through, but we feel every misstep and poor choice as if we were making them ourselves.I am grateful for Livings’ epilogue, which tells us what happened afterwards; it was particularly necessary in this case. It reflects the voice of an older and wiser man (but still very young, to my mind), looking back from a different place into the turmoil of his own youth. It is a quiet, almost anticlimactic finale to Kieran’s story, but nonetheless it moved me greatly.

Hutton This completes the trilogy of classic James Hilton novels (the other two being "Lost Horizon" and "Goodbye Mr. Chips") which were all made into movies during Hollywood's Golden Era. It is the lesser known of the three novels, although Random Harvest is his most complete work.The story is a romance, a mystery, a critque on England's class structure, and a parable. Hilton uses the lost years of Charles Rainier as a methaphor for the lost years of the 1920/1930's when England failed to prepare for the next war. Told in flashbacks and bookended by World War I and World War II, the resolution is only revealed in its final sentence that will shock you and change everything that you have just read & thought you understood. You will go back and re-read the book as your perception of all the characters are altered by the surprise ending.Two cautions: First, see the 1942 Ronald Coleman/ Greer Garson movie AFTER reading the book to see how the ending is handled. Second, the opening few pages are set in an England and of a time that will be unfamiliar to most Americans, but if one continues on, the reader will be deeply rewarded. The ability to be surprised is a rare gift and Hilton delivers.

Dean I had first seen the wonderfully sentimental movie, which is one of my favorites.The book is not so sentimental. In reading the book, I was unprepared for how well-depicted would be the pain of the protagonist's psychological plight, how thought-provoking this book would be about society, and how much an individual could realistically be shown to be at a loss - no matter his external circumstances.This is very much about someone who senses that once his life had meaning to him, and he had happily occupied a niche in the world - and can't rediscover it. The author is so wonderful in conveying this desperation.Mr. Hilton also wonderfully conveys the highs and lows of both the well-born establishment, and the utterly displaced, of inter-war England.And amazingly, he brilliantly evokes the wonderfully dreamy feeling of being in love. The scenes in which Smitty finds the small town, climbs up to the small lake in the hills, what he sees when he awakens, and the following several days, must be among the most moving in fiction.I also love how the author shows the differences in personality between the earnest, sweet, easily alarmed, humble Smitty and the somewhat cynical, immensely able, practical-joking, self-deprecating Rainier - much of the difference seems engendered by the way they're treated and their places in life.I love how subtly the author shows Mrs. Rainier's reaction to Rainier's discoveries - it's just brilliantly done. And the book's ending could not be more satisfying.This is a more thought-provoking book than Goodbye Mr. Chips - and as much as I enjoyed that, this is a better one. I loved this as much as Hilton's So Well Remembered - which is high praise.

Jones An exquisite wartime romance that bears a few resemblances to The English Patient, James Hilton's time-spinning tale is the type of book that grabs you in its first paragraph and leaves you breathless with its last sentence. Just make sure you don't see the wonderful, more straightforward Ronald Colman-Greer Garson film version first. The heartstopping plot twist at the end makes everything that goes before even more magical. Random Harvest is one of those books that you'll read and re-read for many years; I know I have, three times already.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I’m still not quite sure what to make of it... By AJ I was very interested in this story going into it, but I have to say a lot of it was lost on me. The first 60% of this story is world building, which is mostly irrelevant to the plot that finally and slowly starts up (not all of it but about 70% of it). For a story that’s only 20k words in length, I expect to finish in an hour or two at most. This story took me three weeks to read because I really saw no point in going back to it.The plot is simple and easy, when it does finally show up. And frankly, there are a lot of scenarios it should have dealt with toward the end that it didn’t. For a caste that’s so hell-bent on their task, dispatching only one soldier and having no fear of being found again seems unlikely to me.There is a romance that happens within these pages, though I found the romance unnecessary but intriguing. Intriguing only in that the practical aspect of how they have sex was interesting. As for the connection between the characters, I believe a deep friendship would have been simple enough in order to get the plot across. As for the actual sex scene, it was odd and hard to follow. I had issues understanding parts and almost wish it wasn’t there because it was more confusing than interesting or innovative.I did like the aspect of a stranger for a foreign world coming to a new world and having to learn about everything. That was very well described, if mostly irrelevant. The diversity in this piece is vast, which I greatly appreciated. And, if you throw in a Deaf character and sign into anything, I’m probably going to latch onto that and run with it.Overall, not a fantastic read. Alien Encounters (3.5 stars) By Book Gannet This intriguing, short, fish-out-of-water tale mixes Science Fiction with Fantasy in a wonderful blend, where aliens meet dwarves and internal computer programming translates and teaches sign language in next to no time at all.Veni is a wonderful main character. Ze is so open and curious about everything without being patronizing or judgmental. It’s clear that Veni is from a much more advanced world, but ze finds plenty to admire amongst the industrious dwarves, while in Wystan ze finds solace from everything ze had to leave behind.I have to admit I was a little non-plussed about the romance. I wasn’t sure what precisely drew Veni to Wystan – other than his unusual looks, I suppose – and likewise why Wystan fell for Veni. Everything about Veni is so insect-like that I struggled to picture hir face, which didn’t help, and the whole alien sex moment sounded pretty uncomfortable for Veni.However, that aside, I really liked the details about how Veni differed from the humans and dwarves – from breathing to social taboos. It showed real thought from the author and I definitely admired that. I was less convinced with how things ultimately turned out, but in a story this short there isn’t room for in-depth plots or explorations of minor side characters – which is a shame because I really liked those dwarves and was very curious about some things there.Overall, though, this is a well thought out tale that beautifully integrates a gender-neutral character in a high fantasy world, with a deaf romantic lead and some clever female dwarves. It’s full of wonder and curiosity and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll be looking out for more from this author.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

Good Reading By LAS Reviewer Anything can happen on a strange, unfamiliar planet.Veni’s reaction to the social customs on Earth was by far my favorite part of this book. This character grew up on a world where gender is irrelevant to one’s daily life. It was amusing to see how Veni reacted to the even mild divisions of everything from clothing to occupation based on an individual’s gender. Reading these passages truly made me feel as though I were observing human and dwarf cultures from an alien perspective. They were really well done.There were a few small pacing issues at the end due to how closely certain subplots had been linked together. It wasn’t rushed. This section just didn’t quite match the leisurely pace of the beginning. Either choice would have worked wonderfully for this tale, but including both of them made for a slightly uneasy transition to the final scenes. With that being said, this was still something I was incredibly glad to read, and it was only a minor bump along the way.This was such a beautifully descriptive story. Everything from how Veni’s wings shimmered to all of the steps dwarves must go through to mine precious metals were described so vividly that I never wanted to stop reading. Ms. Harrison’s writing style is incredibly smooth. Some of her metaphors were almost poetic in nature, which only made her descriptions of what was happening her characters even more fascinating than they already were.From Stars They Fell is a great choice for anyone who enjoys mixing science fiction with fantasy themes.originally posted at long and short reviews
