For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a US Navy ship in WWII, the risks are high. Not only the risks of injury and death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery. Only a special kind of love is worth taking that chance. But from the moment Daniel meets Jacob's eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knows he has to try. Being together requires figuring out what it means to be gay in an era when they could be discharged, imprisoned, or worse for admitting the desires of their hearts. Their relationship is measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantee there will be a tomorrow. And, if they survive the war, they will need even more luck to keep their love alive through the years to come.

A Beautiful Epic Story By ASavi Daniel Arcadi and Jacob Segal first met on their late teens, back in 1942, when both were part of the crews of USS Gageway, during World War 2. Daniel was Second Seaman and Jacob was pharmacist's mate. The two souls stroke a chord of friendship that soon turned into deeper relationship, when both men realized they had feeling for each other. A feeling that is so strong, that spans more than six decades ...---------------------------About 2/3 part of the book happens in the 1940's, that earlier part of Daniel and Jacob's relationship. We get to read about their connecting as two young men, serving their country. How they stumble on how to do sex for the first time, how they must keep their relationship under wrap, since situation is not really on their side. I love the tentativeness when they approach sex, both never have done it with men before, so they learn their way together. It's so sweet and wonderful. The last 1/3 part of the book tells chunk of chapters in their life, like when Jacob helps Daniel to overcome his post-war trauma, or during Stonewall, or when they finally get a cat .. each and every one of them important. It does feel slightly rushed though, because we only get one or two scenes in the 1950's, 1960's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2012. BUT, I also think it's impossible to capture ALL of the days in the sixty-nine years of their life together. It's perfectly well-written -- Kaje Harper also pens the horror of war, amidst of the love story. Chapter 7, for example, that captures the night when USS Gageway was attacked, and forced Daniel and Jacob to fight for their life in the sea -- it feels like a screenplay out of the "Titanic" movie. It's just so bloody good. Then, the ending, such sweet ending. This story brings tears to my eyes several time over. And as a reader, I can only say thank you for story ...

By Neil in Morgan Hill I have given "Into Deep Waters" a 5-star rating as it deserves it and my whole hearted recommendation.I once was a teacher and also an English major in my undergraduate degree. I am also a 60 year old gay male and my father was a WWII veteran who suffered mental anguish after the war. I didn't want to read a war novel or a dull memoir. Reluctantly, I thought I would give it a try. The novel had set in my wish list for some time and I waited to see what others would have to say about the novel. Based on so many glowing reviews, I decided to give it a try and downloaded the sample. It didn't take long before I quickly completed the download and read it in a day!The story covers the early stages of this budding, loving and endearing relationship as the relationship struggles to survive the war and the deep emotional and physical scars that are left in its wake. Various highlights of Daniel Arcadi's and Jacob Segal's life are captured and captivate the reader as the reader is drawn into the typical issues that face gay relationships over time. As the time period was one that covers tremendous challenges for gay people to rise up out to oppression, the view from the eyes of Daniel and Jacob hint at what it was like for gay couples daring to hope that just maybe there would be some form of acceptance during their lifetime. The end of the story is touching and still brings tears of joy as Daniel and Jacob fulfill a lifelong dream. This story is not always easy to read, but I found the rewards far outweigh the anguish of war. This story is based on a letter and a photo of two men who found each other and stayed together as a loving, committed couple. I do not know how much research was done by the author, Kaje Harper. Whether through a vivid imagination or observation of veterans and older gay couples, the author has created a story that is not only believable but enduring. Kaje does not sensationalize the grim aspects of war nor glosses over its harsh reality. Rather, it is told from the perspective of two men that do what they have to do to serve their country, survive, care for others and care for each other in a horrific situation. I found myself experiencing the anguish, fear and stress of what it was like for so many as they hope and pray for their loved ones away at war. What I most like is Kaje's respect for the reader's ability to relate to the experiences and views of the characters to build an emotional bound with the story. The story is focused on the experiences of Daniel and Jacob and world events as they experience them.I highly recommend "Into Deep Waters" for the romantic who can look past the harsh events experienced by Daniel and Jacob during the war and who can enjoy following a loving couple through various stages of life and who cope with the challenges of ageing.

All the trials and tribulations of being gay in the 40s, 50s and 60s were described so well by the author. It was scary to relive some of those feelings and fears of so many years ago. The story is so well told that I really felt like the two men were people I have known for years.
