2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. bittersweet but hopeful By Amy Crook If you haven't read the first 7 of these, don't start here -- but if you have, you'll be dying to keep going! It's bittersweet to see Daron trying to find his footing after the rugs were pulled out from under him, but there's still some hope. Both Daron and Ziggy are far more mature about a lot of things than they were the last time their lives collided, though this time it's more like a series of near misses. I can't wait to see what happens when/if they finally get back together again.

By Amazon Customer This series is a great read from the first sentence of book 1 to the last sentence in this, the 8th book. Can it be read as a stand alone? Yes....but you will want to read them all! The characters are well written and Daron himself will make you laugh & cry and wish hard that you had attended one of his concerts in the 80s. You will feel the music even if you can't hear it! Go read this series...now...go...GO!

By William Heath The entire series is compelling and addictive. This is fundamentally a coming of age story chronicling the evolution and change in the life of a young man. It is the best such story I have ever read. It is also a retrospective on the rock and roll scene in the late 1980s/early 1990s told from the inside, from a perspective of performers, those whose work is critical to putting on a performance, the recording industry, with a foray into Hollywood and another into fiction writing.Finally it is a story about coming out. Yes, the hero is a homosexual. That is actually less central to the story and the coming of age tale and the view of the r&r industry. Although less central, it allows the author, Cecelia Tan, to explore a tremendous number of issues that a hero's heterosexuality would make more difficult to access. THIS IS NOT GAY EROTICA. It is modern fiction at its best.The retrospective of r&r during the period is the best and most accurate I have read. Twenty years earlier I had been part of the industry. It was fascinating to see how little had changed in two decades. Today, of course, the large recording and publishing companies are in their death throes. There is a foreshadowing of that in this book, but I won't spoil it for you. The music is presented just right, the venues are all accurately described, and when something occurs on a specific date at a specific location, Tan has even researched the local weather.Characters are fully three-dimensional. Tan is able to engage the reader in a character with but a few brushstrokes. When a character has been in two or more chapters, the reader feels asthough she or he has known the character her or his entire life. What other authors take a chapter to describe Tan conveys in less than a paragraph. And, characters are realistic, never cardboard. The really sweet woman can be bitchy, the even-tempered man can lose his equanimity, the villain can do some nice things. Tan spares not a single character from this sort of complexity.At the moment this is an eight-book collection. I bet you can't read just one.
