A young girl, Suiko, discovers her father is missing and impulsively goes off to rescue him. This is not unusual behavior for her--she tends to leap before she looks. She owns a small puzzle box her father made her, but thus far, she's lacked the patience to unlock its secrets. But as she tries to rescue her father, she becomes ensnared in the demon court. The demon king promises her that if she can figure out the puzzle box, her father, who is also prisoner there, will be free to go. So now Suiko tries to learn patience, to figure out the puzzle box her father made for her.Only the demons have no intention of letting her sit quietly and figure out how to escape. They throw problem after problem in her path. And for each, Suiko must try to solve it carefully. Every time she rushes off impulsively, her situation gets worse.I enjoyed Suiko and the Puzzle Box. Stephanie Hunter wrote an entertaining play that's just scary enough to interest children, but not enough to truly frighten them. The Japanese setting is exotic, and Ms. Hunter does a nice job of dribbling in the world-building--just enough to make the Japanese setting relevant.I give it four stars.

Potter Suiko, a young girl somewhere in late 19th-century Japan, discovers that her father went missing on a journey to visit her sister, and sets out to retrace his steps and find him without hesitation. However, along the way, she strays from the path and becomes ensnared in the webs of the Demon Court. Now she must outsmart the demons and unlock the secrets of her father's last gift-a frustratingly difficult-to-open puzzle box, which holds the key to her freedom. This play is well written, with type laid out so as to be legible for elementary schoolers, the intended performers of this work (and it doesn't hurt us adults either!) The reader can clearly understand who is speaking or what is happening at any given time. Also included are a handy pronunciation guide and cultural notes for the reader unfamiliar with the rich culture of Japan, costume, set, and staging directions (the latter three useful for a first-time director), and a complete props list.

About the Author Ryan Field is a gay fiction writer who has worked in many areas of publishing for the past 20 years. He's the author of the bestselling "Virgin Billionaire" series and the short story, "Down the Basement," which was included in the Lambda Award winning anthology titled "Best Gay Erotica 2009." Though not always, he sometimes writes gay parodies of *straight* mainstream fiction/films in the same way straight fiction and Hollywood has been parodying gay men for years, without apology. He also writes hetero romances with pen names, and has edited several short story anthologies. "Chase of a Lifetime," is his first self-published 99-cent Amazon Kindle book. It's a 60,000 word full length novel in the gay erotic romance genre. He has a long list of publishing credits that include over 100 works of lgbt fiction, some with pen names in various sub-genres. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Twists and turns, beguiling and lovable By Erin O'Quinn This latest in the Proctor and Blair private dick series is full of twists and turns, on sexual, emotional and psychological levels. In a nutshell: the two detectives, very much in love, plan their wedding. But Blair, true to his impetuous nature, hatches a slap-dash plan to hire a gay overnight hero named Cameron—a fairly shallow con man—and Proctor goes along with the plan, mainly because it will mean being close to his cancer-stricken mother who lives nearby and also because he truly loves his man.The wedding itself goes off without a hitch. And I confess to needing a box of kleenex during probably the most tender chapter Ryan Field has so far put into his Rainbow Agency series. Bravo! Very well done, a chapter which serves to hold together and justify the relationship of these two men even when a reader may begin to suspect they may not be ready for the mature step of traditional marriage.Field’s story tests how far a marriage and a professional partnership can stretch without breaking. Cameron turns out to be a lazy lout, but he’s great in bed, and he’s a natural manipulator, and neither of the detectives can control him at all once he’s hired. The emotional and psychological action involves Proctor’s mother, who is clearly living her last days; and a fourth man, named Kevin, who joins them in bed and who gets closer to Proctor and Blair than they can possibly foresee. The interest and draw of this book, for me, lies in the way two loving men handle not just another partner, but their own fragile selves. Can a marriage be strong when more than sex is shared, leaving the door open to possible three-way emotional commitment?I’ve never been much of a fan of ménage stories, except the ones written with a grin and a grain of salt, like the author’s earlier Rainbow Agency books. So I need to settle in my own mind whether Field has opened the door to the end of Proctor and Blair as I know and love them … to a whole new interesting and rich relationship. Whichever way he decides to ravel it out, I trust he will still leave us with two of the most beguiling and lovable characters I’ve found in contemporary literature.
