Julian Pham is surviving high school. Openly gay, flamboyantly goth, and Vietnamese-American, he’s just about as different as his Oklahoma City high school can tolerate. He has good friends and a supportive family, which helps, but lately his family is changing and his friends have troubles of their own. Julian is afraid he’s being left behind. Then he meets Duncan. The star of the school basketball team, Duncan has never crossed Julian’s social path. A fateful encounter one cold night brings the two young men together, igniting a romance that neither of them expected, and that both can scarcely believe. But Julian and Duncan are in different places. Julian is happily out, unconcerned with others’ opinions. And Duncan, while he knows who he is, isn’t ready to face the challenges of living out loud. Even as the two grow closer together, Julian begins to question whether he can live with Duncan’s desire for secrecy. And even if he can, does that mean he should? When the crisis of their romance leads to a shocking betrayal, Julian must decide if he will fix this love or tear it apart.

Not only was his personality vibrant and unforgettable, the ways he reacted the things that happened to him fit in perfectly with how the narrator described him. I actually briefly wondered if this character might have been based on a actual person because of how many details there were about who he was and what he thought about all sorts of topics. That is simply how real he felt to me!What I appreciated the most about Julian’s friends was how much they had going on their own lives. Everyone in this social circle had their own problems and triumphs that they shared with the entire group, but they also had other parts of their lives that they weren’t always so keen to reveal. I really liked the fact that the secondary characters had such well-developed backstories. It made me empathize with their struggles and hope that they’d get happy endings just as much as I hoped the main character would. The budding romance between Duncan and Julian was handled beautifully. At first I wasn’t quite sure how a possible relationship between someone who was completely comfortable with his orientation and someone who was still coming to terms with it would work out. Seeing how this conflict was handled only made me root for this couple more, though, because of all of the obstacles in their way.Tearing Us Apart is a must-read. I can’t emphasize enough how much I loved this book!originally posted at long and short reviews

It’s a great YA story with characters that are relatable to today’s youth.Julian is a very “out” teenager and proud of who he is. He spends most of his time with his best friend Echo. If you haven’t read Echo’s story, I recommend doing so before you read this so you have her background which is not touched upon in this book.Duncan is your typical jock. Plays sports, hangs with his jock friends and makes fun of the queer kids. The only problem is Duncan is gay or at least suspects he is gay.Duncan and Julian form a friendship and a very closeted love affair. The story is definitely appropriate for youth as there is no sexual content.Duncan is an abusive horrible person to Julian. He refuses to admit he’s gay to anyone and treats Julian as if he’s nothing in public and that’s when he acknowledges that Julian is even there.Meanwhile, Julian is also struggling with his mother remarrying a man that Julian doesn’t approve of. I feel sorry for Julian through most of the book. I really don’t like the way Duncan treats him though sadly this is very common amongst teens. Furthermore, I’m just appalled that Julian allows Duncan to treat him so poorly but again, this is very common. This book is full of angst, longing, discovery and best of all wonderful friendships. I’m very happy that Julian does have his friends to lean on and support him.

It's the classic YA problem novel--Julian Pham is dealing with his crush while not dealing with his mom's impending marriage. He's likeably queer. Into fashion and make-up, into wit and charm. What I love about Julian is that he's never cast as "other." He's never "different." He has unique qualities, yes, he's a minority, yes, but he's integrated into his surroundings. He owns his purpose. He's got good friends with problems of their own. Everyone's eclectic, no one's "weird."His paramour, Duncan, is also more likable than stereotypical in his own gay exploration. There are moments of joy and romance, there are moments of heartbreak and growing up. Tearing Us Apart squeezes high school tropes so tightly that they transform into something refreshing.I read this in a night, which is not a criticism. It was a fun, fast journey, neither bogged down in angst nor unrealistically perfect. I think people already into m/m YA will love it and people who are new to the genre will find it a satisfying read. For a good time, call Julian Pham.Four stars.~ ChristyI was provided this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated, coerced, or flattered into an opinion.
