No one told Emily Paige she was a witch, and no one would say why they’d kept it a secret for all these years. If she had known the ancient truth she would have run as fast as she could from Wolverton Lodge instead of knocking on the door, all bright and breezy on that dark and cloudy autumnal day. For P.I. Chris Templeton and DS Katherine Baxter it was to be the darkest and most disturbing case they had ever worked on. For fresher witch Lizzie Arnold it was to be a life’s love lost… and for the Witches of Wolverton it would be the culmination of four hundred years of preparation that had begun on a bloody English battlefield in 1645. This exciting paranormal adventure is written in British English and contains sexual scenes and adult language.

The Witches of Wolverton is different. The story is about events that happen in some secret witchcraft school. The plot is good. It is not a Harry Potter clone. I think I would describe the book as a good mix of thriller and paranormal. The story follows several angles, each one is centered on one or several characters. All of them have some interesting traits and made me curious about what would happen to them next. My feelings towards some of them evolved between the beginning and the end of the book which means that there are some unexpected turns. As I said this novel is not smut but it features indeed some hot and well written sex scenes. However the story is not built around them. They make sense in the story because they make sense to the characters. Sexuality is either part of their motives or their strengths or their flaws. There are plenty of good ideas and interesting characters in this book so I can only highly recommend it.

Behind every seduction, there is a fair bit of manipulation. Avery thought she’d been pushy when she’s asked Reese to take her; it’s nothing compared to the extent to which some would go to get what they want. Celeste wants Avery and nothing – no one – will stop her. Not Troy, despite the fact that he doesn’t seem to fall for anything she can do with her very practiced mouth – and certainly not Reese. She loves Avery, Avery loves her. Nothing else matters.

I was expecting something of the kind, to be entirely frank, but when everything became clearer, I was quite shocked!Instead of being fascinated and enthralled by the progression of the relationship between the protagonist, I was reading as quickly as I possibly could to make sure it would survive the storm they’re facing…Well, let’s just say, I’m staying up ‘till midnight to get it as soon as the next one is released next week.

Avery is an 18 year old college student with designs on the tall, dark and handsome football coach, Reese, at her university. He's 35 years old and friends with her dad. Oops. But fiery Avery isn't deterred and is willing to push the envelope to seduce Reese. While she finds mind blowing sex and the end of her virginity, she also finds a lot she wasn't expecting. This review is for a seven part series of short stories, all currently available. As a bonus, each book has tantalizing excerpts at the end.

Twenty-five-year-old journalist Adam Murphy is chasing a career-making story when he is abruptly fired by the magazine that employs him. Scarred by the failure of a recent relationship, Adam finds himself cut adrift in the city of West Hollywood, when he meets mystery novelist James Wilton, a man whose own life has been marked by best-sellerdom, fame, and attempted murder.

Within days of joining Wilton's personal staff, Adam learns that his former lover has vanished without a trace, and that his disappearance matches several other recent missing persons cases. Adam and Wilton begin to suspect a serial killer is preying upon the city's young gay men and decide to investigate.

But the truth is being guarded by a diabolical force that neither man could have imagined, and they explore paths of vengeance, murder, and sexual perversion from the mansion-strung Hollywood Hills to the drug-ravaged plains of California's Central Valley. It is an investigation that will threaten not only their unlikely friendship, but their lives.

Light Before Day is a riveting and complex mystery set against the gothic 21st-century landscape that Rice has made his own.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable, though underexplained By Chantrea Johari I have to confess that Christopher Rice's latest book left me a little bit disappointed. It seems that in this book, Rice was striving to write something more complex - perhaps a bit too complex for his own good. While it seemed in his first two novels that he dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's, this novel left me with significant questions throughout. It was rather difficult to keep track of all the characters and how they were related to each other. Not only that: it seems that Rice declined to fully explain certain plotlines that were essential to the the story, or refused to follow them to a logical conclusion. Characters seemed to be appearing and disappearing at all the wrong points, and it was slightly anti-climactic that the reader neglects to even meet more than one character who seemed essential to the plot. There was too much of the main character and so much wild speculation that the end left me wondering which one of the characters' ever-changing theories was correct; too much was given in bits and pieces over numerous chapters that it was difficult to realize the big picture. Too many things seemed to only be added in as an afterthought and were not, in my opinion, addressed or explained aqequately at the end. While the story was full of intrigue and action, it seemed that the end of each subplot was too abrupt and lacked the impact that his previous books provided. The ending, overall, didn't pack as much of a punch as either of his previous books, or as the action in the rest of the novel would have suggested. This is not to say that I didn't enjoy the novel. It was a very enjoyable read overall, though a work that was by no means flawless. In comparison to his previous novels, I would definately say that this was below my expectations in the way of plot. Rice's technical writing style, however, seems to still be maturing in ways that I find to be very pleasing. Also, I think that Rice did write a cast of rather enjoyable characters, though I wish there had been more focus on some of the considerably "main" characters. As a resident of Los Angeles County, I can also say that it was very enjoyable to be able to identify with the places that Rice described. The book certainly had its ups and downs, though my main grievance with the novel was the way that the ending was dealt with. As a whole, though, I found the novel to be both interesting and intriguing, and it is only in comparison to his previous novels, of which I am an avid fan, that I am critical of his most recent work.

One of my all time favorite books ever was A Density of Souls. I got many of my friends to read it and they loved it as well - great characters, great story, great ending, and just great writing. I enjoyed The Snow Garden as well (other than the unrealistic "sex cult" part).I was so excited for Light Before Day to come out and I was first in line at the bookstore on the day of it's release. What a disappointment. It ended up being one of those books that you force yourself to get though just to say you finished it. I found it hard to follow, too complex, and way too many characters. I am a college educated professional, yet I found myself confused and not following. I had to keep going back and rereading stuff to figure out who was who and who said what. Maybe the genre just wasn't for me, but the story and the mystery was so involved and complex (and again a bit unrealistic) that I found myself losing interest. By the end of the book I didn't care anymore what happened to the characters or how each of the pieces fit together. I was just reading to get through it and I was relieved when it was over, whereas with A Density of Souls I was sad when it was over. A Density of Souls left me wanting more and wanting to find out what happened next with the characters. It just surprised me how I could go from a book that I loved, to a book that I had to force myself to get through - both from the same author. Sorry Chris.Keep bringing us more emotional, realistic stories with great characters like in A Density of Souls and we will stick by you forever.

A Density of Souls & The Snow Garden Part Two: Lost in LA By Maggie Tulliver I was extremely disappointed in this novel, especially after reading his first two. It was far too redundant. It was the exact same thing I had read twice before. Except this time they were in LA and everyone was attractive. I live in Palm Beach, I don't need more hotties in my life. I need realistic gay porn. Dammit. Heh, ok, kidding. But, it was just too cliche'. I couldn't bring myself to finish it, despite my best attempts. I was bored out of my mind. AND ... for back up ... my dear friend who turned me on to Rice in the first place couldn't stand the novel either and refused to finish it. So, I don't think I'm alone on this one. It's not bad ... but it's not worth reading either ... especially if you've read his other two novels. The whole time I was reading going "been there, done that, give me NEW!!"Don't waste your time. Just re-read one of his others instead.

Sire by Kate Pavelle By Lena Grey “When people kill themselves, they think they’re ending the pain, but all they’re doing is passing it on to those they leave behind.” ~ Jeannette WallsIf Brent Kenson and Robbie Kowalski, of 'Sire' by Kate Pavelle, had not been assigned to work together as lab partners, they might have never gotten together. They have been admiring each other from “afar” but neither has the nerve to approach the other. They seem like an unusual pair. Robbie is athletic, huge, and clumsy, while Brent rides horses and is lean and graceful. Brent's family is wealthy, while Robbie comes from a middle class family. Being “forced” together gives them the opening they needed to get to know each other better.Brent's Uncle Atilla and his partner, Kai, own a stable and Brent's favorite thing to do is to be there, where he's learning the horse business. He's an accomplished, competitive rider. He helps teach classes and frequently performs in shows. Brent wants this to be his career, but his father, Tibor, has other ideas. He and Brent's mom are both lawyers and Tibor expects Brent to follow in his footsteps. It's a bone of contention that's caused many arguments between them. As his relationship with Robbie grows, then blossoms into romance, Brent realizes that he is gay. With his father already on edge about his choice of careers and anxiety over a dark secret he overheard concerning his dad, Brent is terrified that learning he is gay will be the last straw; fearing it will shatter their tenuous relationship forever. Brent won't talk to anyone, not even Kai, who strongly senses something is up and especially not Robbie. Confused, Brent decides to break up with Robbie before it goes any further, makes it even harder for Robbie. Feeling like he has no choice, that nothing is ever going to change, Brent begins to prepare for the end.Robbie is euphoric when he spends time with Brent. When he goes to Brent's house for their tutoring session, Robbie is overwhelmed by the size of his house and the apparent affluence of Brent's family. Brent's family is polite, but doesn't exactly greet him with open arms. Robbie's family, on the other hand, is very welcoming when they meet Brent. Robbie's family know that he's gay and it's fine with them. Robbie works with his father's carpentry business; he loves working with his hands and would like to make a career of carpentry some day. Brent wants to share his love of horses with Robbie who has never been around them. When Brent takes Robbie out to the stables and teaches him how to do what's required, he catches on to the routine quickly and is soon comfortable around the horses. When Brent breaks up with Robbie, for no good reason that he can see, Robbie is hurt; he hopes it's just a temporary setback, but when Brent completely withdraws, Robbie has to admit that he's wrong. Seeing Brent at school is absolute torture, but Robbie doesn't know what else to do besides leave him alone. Our teenaged years should be a time of life when everything is simple, but they are often overcomplicated by a teen's undeveloped self-confidence, overthinking everything, peer and parental pressure. Their decision-making skills are not well formed yet, so when things seem overwhelming, their conclusions are not always sound. Brent decides that killing himself is the only way to stop his pain, but he doesn't stop to consider what it would do to those he would leave behind. To further complicate things, Brent is mentally ill; he suffers from depression but those around him didn't recognize it until it was almost too late. People need to be made more aware of these debilitating diseases and recognize the signs so they can help those who suffer from mental illness, because the more they know, the more they might be able to help. Thanks, Kate, for raising awareness and tackling the often taboo subject of suicide. Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good standalone By avid reader Sire (Steel City #4) by Kate Pavelle4 StarsM/M Romance, coming of ageTriggers: Suicidal ideas, bullying, depression, infertilityI was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.I will start this review by saying that this is the first book that I have read in this series, but do not feel that I was missing any important details. You have two main characters - Rob and Brent. Both are struggling, but each with their own issues. You have Rob, who in order to get away from it all, has transferred to a new school. He is trying to reinvent himself away from the accident prone football player in to one of intelligence and grace with woodworking, with an ultimate goal of architecture. Then you have Brent. He has lived a life of privilege, but something was missing. He was always working hard, because he knew that it was expected that he get the best grades. However, he also knows that deep within himself, there is a passion that not even his dad can extinguish. He wants to work with horses, not follow in his dad's footsteps. Both are seeking something, but until they find each other, they just kind of flounder. I thought that this story held a lot of miscommunications, which gave the story, at some points, undue angst. The miscommunications almost costs all of the characters everything.Pavelle did a good job at resolving a lot of the issues and miscommunications, but I felt she skimmed over the issues about suicide a little. While it was discovered, there was no talk about how the characters were helping each other fix the issue. Only that it was resolved. I think that the story would have been more powerful if you had seen the resolution in a more practical and realistic space. This story was more about two boys finding their own way - starting their own paths. It also brought together family, friends and even animals to show that nothing is ever so hopeless.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "Sire takes an excellent look at teenage issues where angst and drama go hand in hand with joy and harmony" By Melissa Three Rivers Academy will be a fresh start for Robbie Kowalski who leaves behind the hated nickname Lummox because his old school couldn’t see past his large, clumsy size. The son of a carpenter, Robbie’s obtained a partial scholarship with excellent grades and impressive science projects so that he can attend the affluent high school.Coming from a family of lawyers and high achievers Brent Kenson is well aware of what’s expected of him. Unfortunately for him, Brent would rather spend every waking hour at his uncle’s ranch, Blue Heron Acres, where they raise and train valuable show horses.A teacher pairs the two teens for an assignment and the boys begin to connect as friends. Robbie accepted his sexuality years ago, though it’s something Brent’s having a harder time grappling with. Curiosity has them taking that first step of kissing on a visit to the ranch. As the days pass their friendship deepens, but it’s too soon for Brent to share secrets that are tearing him apart. Rob will need all the help he can get to catch Brent before he falls too far and makes a decision no one can live with.Sire takes an excellent look at teenage issues where angst and drama go hand in hand with joy and harmony. On the cusp of manhood, sexuality and family expectations weigh heavily for Brent and Rob. A tough, taut plotline leads the main characters on a rough personal journey. Emotionally intense Sire doesn’t pull any punches, yet in the end manages to shine. This standalone story is a welcome addition to the series. This book was reviewed by Lisa for Joyfully Reviewed (JR), and was provided by the publisher/author at no cost to JR for the purpose of being reviewed.

I stumbled across this book on accident. The description sounded good, so I figured why not buy it and give it a shot. This book latched me in on the from the get go by pulling at my heart strings. It took me on a journey following the transformation of a character and leaving me feel like a part of me. . .If I finish that sentence it will ruin the ending. I recommend reading this. It won't be a disappointment.

M.B.M.[ENGLISH TRANSLATION]--Heavy syrup coats this novel of unrequited love. A young suitor remains undaunted by his hysterical heartthrob's debts, tuberculosis, and relationship with a jealous count. Golden-voiced actors take the roles in this radio theater drama, seasoned with sound effects like knocking on doors, eclectic music, and the chattering of people in the background. A clever vehicle for the reading of letters is to have the sender start reading and morphing the voice to become the recipient by the end. The transition from book to script creates confusing gaps, even though a deep, masculine voice adds changeovers between the scenes. The uncomplicated plot and vocabulary would entertain and enlighten students of Spanish as a second language. J.A.H. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Great reading, lousy story By Nathan Walker Like all of the Fonolibro audio books that I've listened to, 'La Dama de Las Camelias' has top notch narration and voice acting, and great production values. Unfortunately, unlike some of their other CD's, the story this is based on is excruciatingly boring. If you want to practice your Spanish and listen to a decent story in the process, I'd recommend 'Harry Potter Y La Piedra Filosofal' or Fonolibro's 'Viaje Al Centro de la Tierra,' and 'El Conde de Monte Cristo.'

I gave it a shot as I had walked through the path of grief several years ago. The book is well edited, and the prose and poetry is lyrical. Although I am sure it served as a catharsis for the author, I did not find it of any great value. It's very short ( read in under an hour) and I would not recommend it to someone still going through the grieving process.

It should be read by anyone who wishes to know what wisdom can be distilled from pain and what solace may be sought in self reflection. Its intensity lies particularly in its naked honesty and crystalline expression. It deserves five stars.

To many people, a family consists of those related by blood, but to others, family has a much deeper meaning. Through a tragic turn of events the Garcias, Knights, Diamonds, and Mitchells -four families who have been lifelong friends- must stand together and lean on one another when one of their own is taken from them by someone they trusted. Along the way they prove that sometimes you don't need blood to be a family. All you need is love.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Book By Amazon Customer This story was beautifully written, from start to finish. I really loved how the main focus of the story was on the friendship between the boys and the love their four families and friends showed for one another. It's hard to find that in stories nowadays, but I think "Those You Trust" had a really meaningful message throughout the whole book, and did a wonderful job at portraying the message that as long as you have loved ones by your side, you can get through anything bad that comes your way. I also loved how even though the beginning (and a lot of the rest of the story) was not very happy, there was still humor in it, as well as happy moments between the boys and their families. This book focuses on something that can actually happen to people in real life, and I think that even if you haven't gone through that situation, it's easy to connect with the characters and understand their emotions.I can't wait to see how the other part of this story turns out. I'm sure it will be just as great as the first. :)

Adulthood sucks. With college graduation behind them, Seth Thompson and Bilal al-Mansoori enjoy their last carefree summer. But the perfect future Seth’s envisioned since high school—moving to New York to pursue a career as an artist—doesn’t appeal to city-phobic Bilal. A job offer allowing Bilal to remain in upstate New York drives a wedge between them, and Seth’s family’s well-meaning interference doesn’t help at all. A trip to the UK for Bilal’s sister’s wedding offers a chance to get back on the same page. But their holiday is abruptly cut short when the unthinkable happens… And Seth faces the very real possibility that he may never see the man he loves alive again.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Once Again By Kathy G The story was great, suspenseful, everything one could ask for. But---and I've read all the Courtland books--someone please tell me why, oh why can't a bisexual man have a monogamous relationship and remain bisexual? Why does it always have to be turned into a triad? Granted, they all loved each other, but--and I'm not a prude by any means, but--this just seems to enforce the stereotype of bisexuals not being able to settle for just one gender without "going over to the other side".

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Romance, sexiness and intrigue By C. Manole Loved this book. It shows the development of established relationships in two generations. The Courtland triad of Nick, Eric and Ally, who continue to evolve with the ups and downs of health problems and political ambitions and on the other side, the younger couple —Seth with his fantasies of being an artist in the city and Bilal, an Iranian with a vision of a more peaceful and bucolic living. The different upbringings and family dynamics play a part in the effort these young men have to make to create their own family rules and reach a loving balance. Add to this the threat coming from Bilal's homeland, that forces them to face serious danger, which will also be important in their growth as individuals and as a couple that is tender and sexy!A pleasure to read, seamless use of the changing POVs, it has romance, sexiness and intrigue, what's not to love?!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Courtland saga continues... By V. Rundell of V's Reads This is the second book in a new Courtlands series that features the developing relationship between Seth and Bilal and also has chapters that revolve around Seth's father Nick's relationship with Allison and Eric.Seth and Bilal have just graduated form Cornell, and they are struggling to figure out what to do next. Seth wants to move to NYC, and jump headlong into the art scene. Bilal relishes the quieter life of upstate New York, and is offered a job in one of Eric's companies working in Rochester. These are incompatible ideals. One thing is for sure, Seth and Bilal are set to spend a month in England, first for Bilal's sister's wedding, but also to take a break since the end of school. They decide to take it easy on the decisions until that time is up, but their best laid plans go seriously awry.I do not want to spoil here, but I will say that there is a forced separation that is especially harrowing for its resemblance to real-life issues of the LGBTQ community in the Middle East, and also some anti-Muslim sentiment. Bilal knows he can never return to Iran, but he's got an expiring visa and needs documents from his mother's effects, currently with his sister in Oxford, in order to continue living in the US. All he wants to do is get there, get his paperwork in order without returning to Iran, and well, it doesn't QUITE work out.Expect some serious baddies to intervene. And expect Eric and Nick and some assistance from an ex-CIA hacker to bring everyone home safely. This was a tense read, with lots of reflection and remorse on the part of both Seth and Bilal. Their early squabbles regarding mutual support and life plans pale in comparison to this real situation, and the possibility of permanent separation.I think the reason I didn't rate this higher, however, was due to a bit TOO MUCH anger. Bilal has some real issues with communication, and he internalizes his hostility and frustration with Seth's family constantly stepping in to "help." His overarching desire to be his own man causes a real rift that puts himself in grave danger, and it irritated me. I had to keep reminding myself that Bilal and Seth are barely 21 y/o and they are gonna do dumb stuff, especially as this is their first real relationship. There is a decent bit of steam, both M/M (for Seth and Bilal) and M/F/M as Allison regains her strength and begins having relations with Eric and Nick again. For their part, Eric is continually being asked to return to the Senate and he may just cave this time. Nick's been working on a book with his CIA contact, and Allison's stepped away from most things in the process of recuperating from her recent MS flare. The Courtland saga continues...though there is sufficient closure in this book to be a satisfying break.

Fast Erotica Novella By HLLaffin This book started off with some introductions, and as we further get to understand Jake Blair we start to see why it is that he is both cynical, and carefree. Becuase of Jakes age it is understandable why he walks out on possibly the two most important people in his life. However the new people he meets, Jake is able to learn to understand some of his own self more. This book is very erotic and a great quick read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. something different By cathy Shae and Bless are sent to a mining facility on another planet powered by steam. When they get there they know something isn’t quite right. They are close and love each other but not as lovers. Shae meets a man with a mysterious secret but he could be their only chance of survival. This was a very good story. The world is set up so well and you feel like you are there with Shae and Bless. I loved the mystery and the romance that develops. The only thing I didn’t like is it was a little short and felt rushed. I would have liked to seen even more danger and intrigue and more of the romance between Shae and Standalone and Bless and the mystery man. I wanted more! More! More! That is a good thing LOL.Recommendations: I highly recommend this if you like something really different. A fantastic new world, A good mystery, A little nice sweet romance, hot doctors and hot men with secrets.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Honest, forthright and surprising By Dorothy M. Young Melissa is heartbreakingly honest, but never stoops to prurience. She balances information about the practicalities of her situation with the excitement of exploration and discovery. And she does it all in a page-turner of a narrative. I've already recommended COLLARED to several people. This book is graphic. But it's essential reading for anyone contemplating a Female Led Relationship, and anyone whose love has taken an unconventional fork in the road.

Adams ~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Inked Rainbow Reads Review Team~ 2 stars for this M/MThis book was very hard for me to get into. I was bored and found myself skimming a lot. I am not sure if something got lost in translation or what but I just couldn’t connect with any of the characters and I felt no emotions what so ever at all. The two characters didn’t even meet until almost 40% into the book. I thought once that happened things would start moving faster and things would heat up. Nope, never happened. Noah was just a jerk in my opinion and then he did at total change of character towards the end of the book. Martin I never could figure out. I thought things would heat up and we would get some good detailed scenes. Nope. Also, every time the book said dominator instead of dominate I would just cringe. I am sure some people will love this book, it just wasn’t for me.

By kara So as much as I like BDSM books there was sadly too much about this book that I was honestly not a fan of...First the degrading Noah did of Martin with the way he would call him ugly in his head. That in no way feels romantic to me.Then the game playing that they did, yes that really annoyed me..There was so much about this book I just could not wrap my head around. There was no real caring between these two MC's that I could see and really no steam that was on page.I don't want to give any spoilers away so I will leave this review this book I am sad to say, was just not for me..I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

Secret Funding is a unique love story with some financial and BDSM background By cinnamon Secret Funding is a unique love story with some financial and BDSM background. In the first half of the book we get to know our main character Noah, who owns his own business and works as a Dominant in a BDSM club, Circle. The storyline keeps switching between his two worlds, the financial one, with his biggest investment negotiations coming to its closing and the Circle. While his work life is very successful, we get to see Noah’s dissatisfaction with his role as a Dominant. He lacks any kind of connection with his subs, and keeps making one mistake after another. He can’t find what he’s looking for. He might not even know what he’s looking for… We clearly understand from the failed attempts in the scene that he is certainly missing something. I really didn’t like these scenes, but understand the purpose of them. When the biggest investment of his life is about to sink, one of the greatest names of the financial world comes to his rescue. Noah is offered a contract and we find ourselves in the middle of a deal, similar to Indecent Proposal and Pretty Woman. Noah accepts the deal, and he finds himself in a situation that might change his life forever and hopefully for the better.I really liked the idea of how Martin teaches Noah about himself, how their connection changes. Martin makes him see everything in a different light, and by showing him what is going on in a sub’s mind he shows him how to be a better Dom. I would have liked to read more about Martin’s background and thoughts. As the book is from Noah’s 3rd person point of view we don’t have any insight of Martin’s world. I think the story idea is great, but some details should have been described in more details. I really enjoyed the ending of the book and it totally made it worth to read.I'd like to thank the author and the publisher for the ARC.Threebooksovertherainbow.wordpress.com

The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table, by Alfred William Pollard, Thomas Malory

About the Author Scholars have determined that there were at least six Thomas Malorys alive in the 1400s when Le Morte d'Arthur was written. Considerable evidence points to the likeliest author as one Sir Thomas Malory or Maleore of Newbold Revell in Warwickshire, who was born in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. A member of the gentry, he became a soldier in the service of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, with whom he fought in the siege of Calais in 1436. In records of the period he is accused of various crimes--including armed robbery, attempted murder, and rape--and he is said to have executed several dramatic escapes from prison. Several things about Malory seem indisputable. As in Arthur's time when post-Roman Britain was in a state of fierce tribal war, he lived in an age of great unrest. Europe was still recovering from the Black Plague and a century of war. In England, two powerful families fought for the throne. Although he may have been a scoundrel, Malory was also, it seems clear, a man of ideals who believed in courage and loyalty, and who mourned the passing of chivalry. Incarcerated for long periods, he had many hours to fill his imagination with French romances and tales of chivalry, volumes of which were readily at hand. It is thought that Le Morte d'Arthur was written during his imprisonment. Malory referred to himself as a 'knight-prisoner.' With a military man's passion for the details of conquest, a prisoner's sense of injustice, and a penitent's desire for redemption, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to this retelling of the Arthurian legends. Sir Thomas Malory died, it is presumed, around 1471.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loved this book! By kara Wow this book was terrifyingly scary!Okay this book was mainly M/F even though the two MC's did not like each other in fact I believe they hated each other so in no way shape or form would I call this anything other than a very good horror book. Yes you do see little parts of Ethan from his POV who is Jeff's brother and also in a relationship with a man named Keaton, they also have a baby.Everything that happened in this book to Jeff's inner dialogue which was really dark and crazy even before he started getting visits from the Rascal to the Rascal which that dark ghost was terrifying. So in this book Jeff and Chloe buy a cottage trying to reconnect after what Chloe had done to Jeff. Well Jeff pretty much hates her now and vice versa. Then all these bad things happen and the things that go bump in the night. Let me tell you do not read this book in the dark like I did I am sitting here still freaked out by what happened in this book. Then there was the ending where I am sitting there wanting to yell through the book Keaton take bug and run right now!The ending in this book was so messed up I was just sitting there stunned for the longest time. I have to say this was one of the darkest books I have read in a long time and I loved it! Because you are sitting there thinking everything will be all right things are looking okay Chloe and Ethan have figured out what to do then Mind Blown!!! What just happened, that was not supposed to happen...Then you are sad because why did that have to happen! So if you are in the mood for a very good horror book were you are sitting there wondering who is more scarier one of the MC's or the thing that goes bump in the night I can not recommend this book enough! I really loved this book because there is nothing better then reading a book were the author has pulled you in the story so much that you feel like jumping when something happens to one of the characters.I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 stars By It's About The Book Chloe Singh-Cane has always had feelings about things, things not quite of this world. She did her best to ignore them, to not see what was hidden to most people. In a last ditch effort to save their failing marriage, Chloe buys a cottage just outside of the small town of Wicker – a way for her and Jeff to get away from their current life and maybe re-connect. A year of regret and recriminations, the consequence of Chloe’s choices. But, really, buying a cottage on a place called Bad Luck Hill by the locals should have been a heads up that things were not going to go according to plan! Their neighbour, and previous owner of the cottage, is faded movie star Lana Pruitt. Lana has her fair share of secrets. Years ago she lost her only child, a daughter Rebecca, and not long after, her husband Michael disappeared. Her days are spent at the big house up the hill from the cottage, avoiding everything and everyone.Despite Chloe’s efforts, Jeff has not been able to forgive or forget and it becomes increasingly obvious he has no wish to try anymore. Maybe he never really tried. Past events showed Jeff had a darkness in him, a shade of selfishness. A way in, perhaps, for something with ill intentions. As the couple settle into their new home, Chloe’s unease builds, her feelings becoming more and more impossible to ignore. There’s something else besides them in the cottage, and it does not mean them any good. Meanwhile, Jeff’s efforts to fix the cottage and the nearby barn slip further and further into obsession. The old well demands his attention and it increasingly becomes Jeff’s sole focus.Jeff’s younger brother, Ethan, finds himself thinking of his estranged brother. Jeff was always the Golden Boy in their family. Although they’ve barely talked for a couple of years, he feels compelled to reach out to Jeff, half-convinced that something is wrong. Ethan has built a good life with his husband Kenton and their young child, but resentment of the older brother who abandoned him still remains. Despite that, when Chloe calls obviously fearful of the strange illness that has taken over Jeff, Ethan goes to them to offer what help he can. What he finds there is more than can be explained away by logic.Wow, this story was deliciously creepy from beginning to end. I felt off balance in the best possible sense, never quite knowing what was around the corner. The Rascal isn’t a romance. There is no sex. This is a horror story through and through. It is atmospheric and menacing and keeps you off balance. Just like a good horror story should. The opening prologue reaches out and grabs you, like it’s saying “you better hang on tight, because this story is going to take you on one hell of a ride”. And it did. The malevolence of the rascal is incredibly disturbing with how it seeps into the thoughts of everyone. I literally had no idea how this was all going to end up. They all had bitterness that the rascal could feed off to find a way in. They all had genuine love that could give them the strength to keep him out. There were twists that blindsided me and kept me on my toes. The imagery is wonderfully emotive. Creepy and melancholic, the author’s deft touch presents a great sense of unease, building the tension as this couple’s broken relationship feeds and strengthens whatever spirit resides within the cottage and its surrounds. The Rascal kept me captivated as the events played out to an uncompromising end. This is horror at its best.

One Of Eric Arvin's Best By Cindi - On Top Down Under Book Reviews Every time I attempt to review an Eric Arvin book I get nervous because I know that there’s no way I’ll be able to tell the story in my review where it does it justice. I’ve been a fan of Eric’s since I discovered Woke Up In A Strange Place in 2011 and I’ve read everything of his I could get my hands on since. Three of his books will forever be considered three of the best books I’ve ever read, and trust me, I’ve read thousands of books. I never read a book by this author that I didn’t love. Not many can suck me into new worlds like he’s always been able to do.Another thing I have to mention is that this is not a gay romance. It is not a romance at all really. It is a horror book with a gay character in it. I hate even saying that, but I know that some people will go into it expecting it to be something it’s not. I watched it happen with a couple of his other books. I don’t want to see it happen with this one. If you’re looking for a romance or anything remotely like a lot of the books in the LGBT genre right now, do the author a favor and read another book. This, coming from a long time fan who feels that everyone should be reading Eric Arvin’s books. With that being said –Jeff and Chloe have just purchased a cottage in the middle of nowhere, sight unseen, in a place called Bad Luck Hill. Married, they’ve been having some pretty serious problems for over a year and this is their way of maybe finding their way back to each other. The problems in their marriage are made known to the reader little by little throughout the book. At first, they just seem like your typical young couple who are hoping to escape to work on their marriage without the interference of jobs and family, but it doesn’t take long before you realize that there are issues between them that might not be fixable. When the couple arrives at the cottage in the woods, Chloe starts having these strange feelings… creepy feelings. She’s always felt that she was a little ‘sensitive’ so it doesn’t take long before she’s terrified of her new home. These feelings she gets aren’t just paranoia. One such feeling actually likely saved her and Jeff’s life once upon a time. In the cottage, there are shadows everywhere, sounds that aren’t the old house settling, and very strange dreams. She tries talking to Jeff about her fears, but she may as well be talking to the old well out back. He’s very bitter about something she did (what caused the riff in their relationship) and if it was up to him Chloe would be long gone. There are some things that can’t be forgiven and when you throw in the fact that Jeff isn’t a forgiving type on a good day, well there you go. Jeff and Chloe may live in the same house, but trust me, they are little more than roommates who don’t get along with each other. While Chloe hates the new place, Jeff absolutely loves it. There’s something about the old barn out back and the newly discovered (by him) well that makes him obsessed. He’s determined to see what’s at the bottom of the old well. Then we have Lana Pruitt. Lana lives in a large house that overlooks the small cottage in the woods. Lana has her own problems and they too are centered around the property the cottage sits on. Lana, with good reason, hasn’t ventured down the hill for many, many years. Things.. happened.. there years before and she swore to never leave the safety of her own house again. Back in the day, Lana was a very famous actress. She had a wonderful husband and a precious little girl. All that is gone now, leaving only a bitter (and eccentric) old woman living in a much too large house on a hill. With Jeff so obsessed with his new projects outside of the cottage, Chloe is forced to deal with the goings on inside it. Voices, the sounds of music at odd times, unexplained sightings, and horrific nightmares that feel as real to her as if she’s wide awake living them. Talking to Jeff is out. He won’t even look her in the eye, much less allow her to discuss her fears with him. When Jeff starts getting sick, Chloe knows there’s more to the place than just a little haunting. Something – or someone – is trying desperately to destroy her and Jeff, and if she doesn’t do something quick, there will be nothing left.Chloe and Lana strike up a friendly relationship of sorts. It would never be called a friendship, as Chloe is (in my opinion) a little too self-centered to open her eyes to anything outside of her own little world. Jeff is still acting strangely and getting sicker by the day. This, on top of being horrible to Chloe for just being in his presence.Perhaps I should enlighten you a little about Jeff. Jeff was the ‘Golden Child’ growing up. He had a younger brother, Ethan, but it was common knowledge to all that Jeff was the favorite of the parents. He was the athlete, the perfect child, the, well, everything. Poor Ethan was lucky if his mother and father even glanced his way. They had no problem letting Ethan know that he would never be as good as his older brother of two years. I won’t spoil it here, but I will say that I was not a fan of Jeff for a variety of reasons, one of which was his relationship with Ethan. Ethan is gay and it was fairly obvious that that was an issue for Jeff and Chloe.Ethan is married to Kelton and they have an adopted child, affectionately dubbed ‘Bug’. While Kelton and Bug weren’t in the story much, they were in it enough for me to fall in love with them. Out of the blue Ethan starts getting a strange feeling in regards to his estranged brother. It’s something he can’t explain even to himself, but he knows he has to check on him, even if it means dealing with his sister-in-law, who he blames for the demise of his and Jeff’s relationship. While speaking with Chloe in a video chat, he sees something behind her in the cottage and (to be blunt) he kind of freaks out and knows beyond doubt that something is seriously wrong in his brother’s world. It doesn’t take long before he’s off on a trip to parts unknown in hopes of fixing whatever is going on. Does Jeff deserve his brother’s help? Probably not, but family is family and Ethan can’t go on without at least trying to help in any way he can.I adored Ethan from the moment he was introduced… everything about him. As the sister of another ‘perfect’ child (believe me, I could relate in so many ways to Ethan’s childhood), I had a lot of sympathy for him. I think it’s pretty obvious that I didn’t like Jeff too much. I thought I liked Chloe but when I discovered what she’d done to Jeff way back when, any good feelings I had for her disappeared in a puff of smoke. When Ethan arrives at the cottage is when everything really starts coming to a head. I could say a lot more, but I won’t because it would spoil the entire book. I will say that there’s more than one ‘ghost’ or ‘being’ involved in the hauntings on Bad Luck Hill. I will also say that this is one hell of a creepy book. I’m a huge horror fan, so I was all over those aspects of the story, but they might bother some readers.Once again, Eric Arvin has blown me away. There is one part in the book where I had to sit my Kindle down and send my blog partner a message saying “Oh my gawd! I did not see what just happened coming.” It’s one of those things that I should’ve seen, but it never clicked until the author said it point blank. Suddenly every single thing that had happened in the book so far made sense in ways I never would’ve imagined. Not much can take me by surprise in books these days. It was refreshing to have that “A ha!” moment thrown at me unexpectedly. If you’re already a fan of Eric Arvin’s books, you’ll be all over this book. If you’ve never read him and love horror, I can’t recommend it (or any of his books) enough. I feel like a broken record when I say that Eric Arvin’s writing is brilliant and that was proven yet again in The Rascal. I’ll admit that the ending kind of threw me for a little while and I had to walk away to collect my thoughts before attempting this review. Looking back I know that the ending was 100% perfect and it couldn’t have ended any other way.Review originally published at ontopdownunderbookreviews.com.
