It has garnered mixed responses from those who have read it. Most seem to rate it highly but others have found it too uncomfortable. It is definitely hard to say you 'like' it.It is not an easy book to read and I found the ending painful and unexpected. It is a depressing story although very thought provoking. Should you read it? I'd say yes but be prepared for an emotional read without a happy ending.I won't say more, there have been enough reviews written that go into depth. I would recommend checking out Kazza's review on Goodreads for some more insight into the story.

I think that menace was the thing I loved most about it. Maybe I could have done without the forewarnings as we went along. The end felt inevitable. YET, it wasn't quite the end I expected. I really enjoyed it. Super characterization, a plot that worked, some fascinating secondary characters and a brilliantly drawn narrator. One I'd read again, even knowing how it ended.

By Rox I really liked the idea of going back in time, and getting a small taste of what it would have been like to love another woman when essentially, the whole world seemed like it was against you. Each time period reflected the mentality of love and relationships. The frontier period explored what some so-called “spinster” women may have REALLY been. The antebellum south story explored what it was like to not even be able to decide when you ate, slept, drank, or even moved. A time when you had no rights at all as a woman AND a woman of color. Lesbian love in New York City during the 1940's brought homosexuality more to the forefront. Gays and lesbians could hide in plain sight, both were starting to emerge in a big way. The butch/femme dynamic was very strong during this time period, this was my favorite novella out of all four.The last novella gave us a taste of love in the mid 1970's with love at the prestigious West Point Academy. I had heard about West Point growing up, but knew nothing about the military school itself. This novella gave some small insight into the rigorous programs, and all that the women entering the school for the first time ever, had to face. A first year cadet at West Point had a hard enough experience, but for women entering the academy for the first time in 1975 it was worse. The young women who found love here had to make big sacrifices and hard decisions. This novella was more educational and informative for me rather than loving, I appreciated it nonetheless.I'd recommend this book to anyone wanting just a glimpse of loving differently throughout time, and the courage it took to live the life you wanted, rather than the one you were “suppose” to live. My only complaint was that these stories were not longer, I would have loved to get deeper, more detailed versions of each one. 5 stars!

Tibullus, of equestrian rank and a friend of Horace, enjoyed the patronage of Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus, whom he several times apostrophizes. The Pervigilium Veneris, a poem of not quite a hundred lines celebrating a spring festival in honor of the goddess of love, is remarkable both for its romanticism which transformed classical into medieval literature.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Ancients In a Translation That is Alive Today By S. H. Wells The Loeb Classical Library collects three poets of love together in one volume. First, Catullus is probably the most often studied poet of the group. The reading the poems and glancing across the page at the Latin original gives the reader a much stronger sense for how carefully crafted Catullus's verse is. The Loeb editon has been in circulation for about 90 years; however, it has recently been revised and reissued. Since Catullus was a little racy for the early 20th Century, many of his poems were translated into a very stilted form (or not translated at all). The new edition from Loeb corrects this and takes into account the 100 years of classical scholarship to produce a very authoratative and readable edition.Second, Tibullus presents an interesting case, because few if any of his poems can directly be attributed to him. This in and of itself may not merit much attention -- particularly after reading the textual introduction which described just how torured a path classical texts have walked in coming down to us today. The poems about Sulpicia are the real interest here in that they may be written by her.Finally, Tiberianus's Pervigilium Veneris attracts attention because it suggests the move away from classical poetry to Medieval forms.The Loeb edition is well crafted with sewn binding and acid-free paper. These poets have survived 2000 years, and the Loeb edition is sure to be valued for generations.

Major new edition of Catullus should become standard By A Customer Thomson's edition of Catullus finally weds a commentary to his twenty-odd year old critical text. For the scholar of neoteric poetry, Thomson's book is a must; undergraduates will find it too vast and too unconcerned with elementary matters (also with literary matters) but very helpful for bibliography on each poem (a role Quinn's text was growing a bit long in the tooth for). Graduate students are compelled to use this as their standard text. Thomson is at his best when unraveling the often diffuse manuscript tradition of this often-read, little-understood poet. For classicists with only a passing interest in Catullus and his work, Fordyce (supplemented by Quinn for the "obscene" poems) remains more than usable.

Catullus and Tibullus: Exemplars of Roman Love Poetry By Johannes Platonicus Catullus and Tibullus relatively belong to the same epoch in the history of Latin Poetry; and they also derive their inspiration through the same source--from Erato the Muse of Love Poetry. What one will encounter, then, while reading their works, is what may be perhaps the finest manifestation of Roman Love Poetry that has been passed over to us through the ages. With the exception of Propertius or Ovid, Catullus and Tibullus have no rival when it comes to the art of love poetry; and one may argue that the former poets only surpass the later in their bulk of extant poems and in their depth of subject-matter. Also included in this volume, is the Vigil of Venus, a warm and colorful poem attributed to a certain Tiberianus, who belongs to much later time, likely during the reign of the Antonines. As the introduction points out, the Vigil of Venus contains the first piece of Romanticism to be found in Western Poetry. It is a poem of exceptional merit, and it is not unworthy of the majesty of Catullus and Tibullus. Taken as a whole, students of Latin Literature, and poets of our day, have much to learn and enjoy by reading these noble classics.

I felt compelled to draw on the things going on in the world and in my generation as things such as sexual identity, loss, marriage, abuse and more all took a more prominent hold on the world around us all in recent years. I wanted to write a story with both a message and characters that people could identity with. This is definitely one of the more personal writing experiences I've had, and I think it translates well onto the pages of this novella.

He has a way of writing that really sucks you in and makes you want to keep reading, until the next thing you know it's over. It was a really quick novella that had me wrapped up in it from chapter one.Void follows the lives of six friends as they get through trying times in their lives. Javier is depressed after his girlfriend is killed by a drunk driver, Pamela is living with a verbally abusive alcoholic father, Jasper is gay but has yet to come out tot his very religious parents, Michelle is in a physically abusive relationship, and Brienne and Julian are married but struggling to keep it together. All must ignore the troubles going on in their separate lives to help bring each other up to let each other know the true meaning of family.I loved all of the characters, they each played a crucial role in the story and made me wish I had friends like this. I loved how they dropped everything to be there for each other no matter what was going on. Everyone needs a friend like that- I'm glad I have one like that. I like that all of the characters were believable, they were going through real problems and it made them so much stronger.
