He'd give his life to protect the president's son. But he never expected to risk his heart.Growing up gay in the White House hasn't been easy for Rafael Castillo. Codenamed "Valor" by the Secret Service, Rafa feels anything but brave as he hides in the closet and tries to stay below the radar in his last year of college. His father's presidency is almost over, and he just needs to stick to his carefully crafted plan. Once his family's out of the spotlight, he can be honest with his conservative parents about his sexuality and his dream of being a chef. It's definitely not part of Rafa's plan to get a new Secret Service agent who's a walking wet dream, but he's made it this long keeping his desires to himself. Besides, it's not like Shane Kendrick would even look at him twice if it wasn't his job.Shane's worked his way up through the Secret Service ranks, and while protecting the president's shy, boring son isn't his dream White House assignment, it's an easy enough task since no one pays Rafa much attention. He discovers there's a vibrant young man beneath the timid public shell, and while he knows Rafa has a crush on him, he assures himself it's harmless. Shane's never had room for romance in his life, and he'd certainly never cross that line with a protectee. Keeping Rafa safe at any cost is Shane's mission. But as Rafa gets under his skin, will they both put their hearts on the line?

About the Author After writing for years yet never really finding the right inspiration, Keira discovered her voice in gay romance, which has become a passion. She writes contemporary, historical, paranormal and fantasy fiction, and--although she loves delicious angst along the way--Keira firmly believes in happy endings. For as Oscar Wilde once said, "The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means." Find out more about Keira and her books at www.keiraandrews.com.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Action-Packed, Well Written and Moving By Alan Arthur Katz Keira Andrews is a new author for me, and after reading "Valor on the Move", I don't know how I missed her. She is a strikingly talented writer. Despite the over-the-top concept, the book doesn't have a single misstep, not in plot, description, characters, dialogue or theme. Her writing is eloquent and elegant. This is one of those rare books I just couldn't put down. I read it in a single sitting."Valor" is a story of two men, Rafa (short for Rafael), the young adult son of the President of the United States, and Shane, a Secret Service agent attached to "Valor's" protection detail. There is nothing about the two men that would justify a romantic interest between them. Rafa is an understated student at UVA, dedicated to being invisible to protect his father's career and fulfill his position as the "other one", not the daughter who is always in the tabloids, the brother who's about to become a political power in his own right (the "perfect" son) or the slightly older brother who is a world-class swimmer. He's just a bland kid at college with a big secret: his girlfriend is not his girlfriend, she's his beard. And he's hers. Best friends, they are both gay, both living in fear of their parents' disapproval, and both determined to execute their own plan for freedom and honesty, as soon as Rafa finishes school and his parents leave the White House.Shane, on the other hand, is a professional field agent with the Secret Service who worked his way up through a whole series of out-of-the-way postings until he finally reached one of the plum jobs - a protective detail in the White House. He's big, muscular, gorgeous and almost twice Rafa's age, about to turn forty. He loves his job but carries some serious baggage. His beloved parents passed away six years ago in an electrical house fire. He blames himself for their deaths, as he was supposed to be with them, at home, the weekend they died, but was called in by the agency and was unable to make the trip. Something died inside him when his parents passed away. He's consumed with guilt for not being there and not saving them. He stopped living life, and just inhabited it, without passion or commitment. He's also an out gay man and could be the poster boy for Secret Service recruitment, he's so muscular, masculine and yet looks elegant as hell in a well-tailored suit. But his love life? Occasional one-night-stands and rare encounters with a sex buddy he's had for years. But these two men, so different, so weighted with angst and drama, fall in love at first kiss. It's a kiss that cannot happen. It's an unthinkable conflict for an agent to get emotionally involved with a protectee. Yet there it is, all the same, no matter how much both men decide it can't happen, it does.Rafa is going through a particularly hard time. His father is a right-wing Republican who has toed the conservative line and promoted every anti-gay bill that comes up for a vote. There was one moment, in particular, that devastated Rafa. He was required, without warning, to attend an event where he would stand on the stage, in the harsh glare of the TV lights, waving and smiling, supporting his father, not knowing he would be announcing his support for an anti-gay Constitutional Amendment to banish all same-sex marriage nationwide. He was devastated. And later, when he found out that this parents, the ones committed to denying basic civil rights to gays, knew he was gay (or at least suspected) since he was very young, making him stand up on a stage, smiling like a moron as his own father demanded that Rafa's human rights and equality be revoked. His own parents!Rafa goes insane. Sick of being a prisoner of the White House, and furious at the betrayal of his own parents, he runs. Shane chases after him in an agency SUV, follows him into another state and confronts him, to convince him to return to the White House when he stops at a deserted highway rest stop. The unthinkable happens and Rafa is taken when Shane is downed by a bullet that grazes his head. Shane must find him, rescue him and make sure no one ever hurts his Rafa again.I'll leave the rest of the action-adventure story for you to discover in Ms. Andrews' propulsive prose. Rest assured, it's a page-turner, and although you're always pretty sure that Rafa will be rescued, there's no similar confidence that the two men will ever have the opportunity to be together, or to share their love and lives, and that is, perhaps, the most engrossing and engaging part of "Valor on the Move".Though the premise, at first, may strike you as being a bit over-the-top, rest assured that Ms. Andrews' writing makes it all feel all too believable. Her characters are deeply and beautifully drawn, even the bad guys, and Rafa's heartless mother, the First Lady. We eventually find out why she is so uptight, and how much and deeply she really does love her son. These characters are deep, vivid and believable. The dialogue and badinage are always real, as is the glacially slow and uncaring bureaucracy that is any Federal agency. The action is brief, but heart-stopping, and the love between the men, heart-warming and moving. If you like a love story with a little action-adventure, and characters who are bigger than life, you'll love "Valor on the Move". I know I did, which is why I recommend it with all my heart. Don't miss this one.Alan reviews LGBT fiction at the Sinfully Addicted... blog.

A forbidden flirtation and serious sexual tension between the quiet, closeted, twenty one year old son of the sitting U.S. President and a mild mannered Secret Service Agent who is pushing forty and turns out to be a total badass? I just had to see how it all worked out! It’s just Rafa’s luck that the new agent assigned to his Secret Service detail happens to be his wet dream come true. All Rafa is trying to do is keep flying under the radar and ride out the last seven months of his father’s term then freedom is his. The politics of his father’s two terms in office and his mother’s attempts to orchestrate his future and crush his true desire to be a chef have beaten him down. He plays nice for the camera but he is hurting inside and acting as if everything is fine. He can only be himself when he’s talking to his best friend and even that has to be coded as nothing is really private in is life.Shane has had his share of boring details and guarding the quiet child of the President is expected to be just another one in his quest to one day be assigned to the President’s protection detail. His job is not conducive to a relationship and that’s fine with Shane. Turns out that Shane’s preconceptions of Rafa were way off the mark. What he finds is a sexy, compassionate, smart, but lonely young man who he is drawn to like nobody before, and Shane is soon fighting a losing battle to keep things strictly professional.Despite an age difference of almost twenty years the two have a lot in common and their chemistry is amazing. Rafa’s insecurity sometimes made it feel like he was younger than 21, but he also been very sheltered. There is a nice build to the romance as Rafa practices cooking with Shane is his taster and the two get to know each other better each quietly crushing on and fantasizing about the other. Rafa would love to get closer to Shane and a stolen kiss rattles both men, but he doesn’t want to put Shane’s job in jeopardy or out himself. Shane recognizes his feelings are inappropriate and does try to pull away, but the moment he senses that Rafa is in any distress, he can’t help but blur the lines again. The story really kicks into high gear with a life or death situation that tests Shane’s professionalism and his feelings for Rafa. The action scenes were gripping and the outcome of the situation unexpected. As for the sex, Rafa is a virgin, but he knows what he wants and is not afraid to verbalize it. Shane is no slouch in the dirty talk category either and they definitely steamed up my Kindle screen! In addition to the budding romance between Rafa and Shane there are a few other storylines playing out that impact the relationship. I’m not going to give any of it away, but when Rafa’s whole family comes together for his father’s birthday, Rafa reaches a breaking point and the book didn’t let up from then on.I really liked the way everything played out and appreciated that things didn’t just quickly and magically fall into place. While the story has a wonderful, happy ending, there is so much ahead for the new couple, I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to one-click a sequel to see where Rafa and Shane go from that point on.Reviewed by Debra for Sinfully...Addicted To All Male Romance

Quite an intriguing thought for a high ranking official in the White House, right? Well, Keira Andrews played with the idea and came up with a fantabulous story.Rafa is gay, closeted and in hiding. Every decision he makes is based on a best foot forward. He is just waiting and biding his time for when his father's second term as president is finally done. Then, maybe? Just maybe, he can finally go leave, get to be the chef he'd always dreamt of becoming and have the family he'd always craved for. With a loving man by his side. In the meanwhile, he is lying low and out of sight. That is, until he looks up and sees his new bodyguard. Oh boy.Shane is a Secret Service agent. He worked hard to get to his position and makes sure he puts the right foot forward at all times to guarantee his career is stable. In this day and age of stupidly idiotic economic storms, he needs a stable job. He is not willing to endanger it for any thing or any one. That is, until he gets to know the young man he is babysitting for the remainder of the current president's second term is over. No!Well, of course I loved this story! For one thing, its action packed and there is mystery that endangers both MCs lives. And then there is the fact this is an May December romance. Yes! Erotic older lover! And so hunky, strong and romantic too. Ms Keira really nailed it on the head with this latest release. You like Keira Andrews? You like erotic older lovers? This is the book for you. Oh, on a side note, this was a really fast read.Note: The only thing I am disappointed with is this: It. Ended.Darned it!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Stinkweed By S. Thomas Based on the positive reviews and excerpt, I purchased "What Grows in the Garden" hoping to have a light read about past lovers finding their way back to each other again. Elle and Harper grew up together and loved one another all of their lives. But Harper wasn't suited for small time life and left for a new life in Germany. Now he is back and he wants Elle. He is "seemingly" offering her everything that she has ever wanted, but there is a catch that could pull them apart.I wanted to like Elle, but I couldn't. I didn't respect her choices at all. I did understand her motivations, but I found her to be a short sighted, selfish and foul mouthed character that I could neither like or respect. The same could be said for Harper. Harper's main concern was always Harper. I would describe him as both arrogant, and selfish He may have loved Elle, but not enough to make it work. I thought he gave up far too quickly in the past, always secure in the knowledge that Elle would always love him and ultimately be there for him.Their interactions with each other just didn't ring true to me. After so much time away and all of the ways that these two hurt each other, I didn't buy their frank and honest conversations about their feelings, Elle's marriage and Harper's abandonment. It just wasn't realistic to me that Elle would open up enough within a couple of days to tell Harper some of her most intimate feelings about her late husband and their marriage. I also thought that these two hopped into bed and little too quickly. The writing style was fine and this is not one of those novellas without a plot or horrible grammatical errors. I just didn't like the two main characters. The only answer that I have to "What Grows in the Garden" is stinkweed.

Even though you knew that they H/h knew each other growing up, the way they reconnected and why was too much too soon. The relationship almost seemed forced instead of being the all encompassing love that we are supposed to believe that share. It was a quick read, I nice way to pass a couple of hours, but it missed the mark by just a bit.

Elle finds solace in her garden where she plants a flower for every person she has lost in her life. Elle has planted flowers for everyone except one person, Harper Sobieski, the man who broke her heart. Elle never wanted to see Harper again until he showed back up in sunset, Texas looking handsome as ever. Could Elle be dreaming? Or is she really happy to see Harper even though she knows she shouldn’t be?Harper Sobieski left Texas and working himself into a cushy job which provided him with a lot of money but never cured his aching heart. Harper knew he was wrong for leaving Elle and has spent every day wondering how to get back to her. When he returns to claim the woman he loves, Harper must tell Elle the reason behind his spare of the moment visit. Will Elle agree or will she turn Harper away? What Grows in the Garden is a romance story that you don’t want to end. The author does a wonderful job embracing the reader into the story behind Elle and Harper’s lives. I could relate to both characters and anticipated what Elle would decide. This was an entertaining romance story and I recommend it to others. This book was provided by the author for review purposes only.Teresa BeasleyA&RBC Reviews4 Stars=Great Page Turner

Two women vow to bring a killer to justice. Deputy Andrea Sullivan had hoped to leave the horrors of Los Angeles behind her, but the serial murders of college students in peaceful, picturesque Sedona are her nightmare case to solve. The complexities stretch local resources to the limit, and the FBI joins the case with Agent Cameron Ross in the lead.

The crime scenes are covered with the trademark signs of the fiendish Patrick Doe, whose handiwork has been investigated by Dallas detective Tori Hunter and others. But where Hunter failed Cameron intends to win. She will break the case, find justice and go home. No distractions. Unfortunately, Deputy Sullivan is very distracting. And Patrick Doe has other plans.

I've read Gerri Hill's other novels and they are good reads. Some are very good. Those of us of a certain age can all too easily remember when there were virtually no books that affirmed or even recognized our daily lives, except to cast us as serial killers and psychos. Perhaps for that reason, we may not always hold current writers to a sufficiently high standard. That said, Ms. Hill has always delivered a quality novel. Devil's Rock is, however, is much better than good. It represents a significant step forward in her work and is an outstanding, quality work of fiction. Devil's Rock is a good story, well told. The characters -- all of the characters -- are thoroughly rendered and allowed to resolve themselves in a way that is true to their nature, not just a formula predicated by a genre. The main characters are complex and compelling. Their attraction draws the reader in. The love scenes are sensual and lyrical. If you're looking for a good novel, I highly recommend Devil's Rock. If you're one of Gerri Hill's regular readers, your loyalty will be richly rewarded. If you're a brand new reader, you're in for a treat.

She thought she would leave her past and secrets behind her and have a fresh start. It was not to be. A series of murders puts paid to her peaceful existence bringing the horrors of L.A back in full force to her. The FBI are called in and Andi finds herself working with the arrogant Agent Cameron Ross. Andi dislikes Cameron at first, but gradually comes to like and respect her as they join forces to investigate the killings. The clues lead Andi and Cameron to believe that Patrick Doe, the serial killer Tori Hunter had investigated and lost, had resurfaced. Andi and Cameron pull out all the stops to solve the case and catch the killer. At the same time they find themselves losing the fight against the attraction that is consuming them both.I've read all of Gerri's books and I would say that this one is one of the best she has ever written. Definitely the best out of the detective stories. I just could not put this one down and would really recommend it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Only Average By Vix Reader * No Synopsis*I am a big Gerri Hill fan. I love her ability to move between strictly romance and crime genres. Unfortunately, I found this offering to be somewhat mediocre.Basically, everything just felt too easy. The main charachters open up to eachother too quickly, their emotional scars are too similar and their attraction to eachother goes from 0 to 60 way too fast to seem genuine. The plot line comes across as confusing, but it also gets resolved too easily. The main charachters literaly stumble upon the perpetrator.Of course, Hill's writing is top notch, but I just expected more. Her "Target", "The Killing Room", and "The Scorpion" are so good that "Devil's Rock" left me unsatisfied.

Could Not Put It Down By KATHI Gerri Hill time after time creates fresh powerful thrilling stories intertwined with heart-pounding romances and Hunter's Way is no exception.Tori Hunter is an arrogant, abrasive Homicide detective who alienates every partner she has ever had. In the middle of a series of murders, Samantha Kennedy transfers from the Assault division and is paired with Tori after she blows through another partner. Even though Tori is considered a nightmarish partner, Samantha stands up to her. While Samantha challenges her attitude, she respects Tori's strong instincts as an effective detective. This bodes well for their relationship as they pursue a serial killer who may be targeting the gay and lesbian community. As their professional partnership develops, their strong attraction for one another is undeniable. Their only obstacles are Sam's boyfriend and Tori' very tragic past.Hill is a master at building her characters' professional and personal relationships slowly, effectively absorbing them into the main storyline. We get to know Sam and Tori well as the plot progresses. We understand Tori's total immersion into her career as her horrific past unfolds. We see Sam struggle with her lack of passion for her boyfriend while she is discovering new and powerful feelings for her partner that cross the line of professionalism. Tori`s and Sam's characters grow as their partnership intensifies. They learn to trust each other as they encounter dangerous situations, and this aspect of the partnership is very different for Tori. For the first time in Tori's career she has a real partner, and for the first time in her life, she has a friend who cares about her. Tori also wrestles with inappropriate feelings, especially because she believes Sam is straight. But as the violence in their daily lives continues, they are forced to face their attraction to one another.Hill weaves a romance that leaves this reader breathless while crafting a police procedural that is thorough and easy to follow. The stages of tracking down a serial killer are interspersed in the story, moving it along smoothly. The dialogue throughout is on fire with passion. The tenderness in the story embraces the reader and is overpowering. Hill's pacing is even with no abrupt starts or endings. Even though we learn the killer's identity two thirds of the way through the story, the ending is a surprise. There is more to Hunter's Way than we suspect.

It didn't dawn on me until well into the book that one character was "tall and dark-haired" and the other was "shorter and blond". It's a well-written if pedestrian mystery. Anyone who reads mysteries on a regular basis will figure out "who dunnit" fairly quickly, but the interactions of the characters are fun to read. This is a great example of how an uber-Xena should be.I'll definitely be putting Ms. Hill on my watch list.

Johnson When I first picked up this book and realized the main character is named "Tori Hunter," I was a little concerned. You see, I live in Minnesota and one of my favorite players on the Minnesota Twins baseball team is outfielder Torii Hunter. Let me put your fears to rest... Tori in the book is NOTHING like Torii on the field... She's much, much more intriguing.Tori is a homicide detective who has had six male partners in as many years. Her partners either threaten to quit or they are injured on the job, so she gets assigned to someone else. Known as cold and heartless, many of her peers shun the idea of being assigned as her partner. In walks Samantha Kennedy. Samantha has recently been reassigned to Homicide per her request and is Tori's new partner. Samantha's boyfriend doesn't support this career choice because he envisions their marriage, children and grandchildren. (Note: Her boyfriend is more of a frightening comic relief than a part of the real story. He seems almost seemed like an afterthought on the author's part. Hill builds the tension between Sam and her boyfriend, almost turning it violent when she tells him it's over. However, even that tension doesn't play a pivotal part in the story.)As Sam begins to break down Tori's rigid exterior, she begins to have feelings for a woman for the first time in her life. Confused, but intrigued, she doesn't resist. Tori can't deny the growing magnetism she feels for Sam and struggles with allowing the other woman in.Hill is undeniably one of my favorite authors. Her characters seem to spring to life. Admittedly, they are a little "more" than real, but that's what makes her books so fantastic. `Hunter's Way' is a welcome addition to my personal, permanent collection. Highly recommended.
