When dreams come true, they often herald the start of a nightmare. Kanno Sakamoto, billionaire, yakuza and fantasist, returns in a tale of murder, revenge and political skullduggery. Having been released from the institution on the orders of Oishi Noburu, the leader of one of Tokyo's most notorious clans, Kanno finds himself at the mercy of the Oyabun, his devious son, Katashi — and the brutal enforcer, Kawai. Not only is he expected to marry the boss's daughter, he is press-ganged into running for the post of governor in the prefectural elections. Initially viewing the plot as an opportunity to get back at his former brotherhood, the Tatakai-gumi and their charismatic leader, Kazuo Kurosawa, he soon realises that his life is heading dangerously out of control. Can he escape the clutches of the Noburu-ya men? And will the return of his beloved Hyung mean salvation — or a descent into further insanity? In this, the sequel to both The Gangster and the Samurai and Money, Bullets and Swag, Katsura and Yuramei present one of their most popular, yet challenging characters, in another dark, but often humorous story. Peppered with a healthy amount of passion and intrigue, The Soldier and the Samurai is a must for fans of Kanno's unique narrative style. Contains explicit sex and graphic violence.

By Pinkerbelle Rex I am absolutely crazy for this extraordinary and wickedly decadent tale about the sad, mad, but deliciously bad, elite Yakuza psychopath, Kanno Sakamoto. I adore this character! He reminds me of a Japanese Tom Ripley (as played by John Malkovich in the 2002 movie Ripley’s Game) with a touch of Dexter Morgan (the vigilante serial killer from Jeff Lindsay’s books that became a hit Showtime series)…so cool, calm and collected in his crazy. But make no mistake, Kanno is a highly original character. Armed with a saytromaniac’s appetite, a samurai-trained body, and a gorgeous face that successfully camouflages his badass madness, Kanno Sakamoto is the epitome of hot, dark, and dangerous—with a little tragic thrown in—which only makes him that much more compelling. Even now, days after completing his story, I can’t get this charming anti-hero out of my mind…I fear I’ll go mad with it…wanting more Kanno, that is.As the blurb mentions, the authors penned two previous Kanno Sakamoto-based books and I highly recommend reading them before delving into this third as some of the characters appear in all three books.‘The Soldier and the Samurai’ finds Kanno released from a mental institution and groomed to run for governor by the oyabun of the Noburu-ya, a powerful Yakuza clan. When Kanno hears that his greatest enemy now heads the Tatakai-gumi, a position he once held, he agrees to run for office hoping for an opportunity to gain revenge on his former clan. He is forced to seal his bargain with the Noburu-ya by marrying the oyabun’s daughter, whom he can’t stand and has no intention of bedding. What follows is a beguiling tale of Kanno’s attempt to maintain the appearance of a sane, civilized man with a political agenda and a society wife, while calculating how to wipe out the Tatakai-gumi clan and their leader. But to gain the strength and will to succeed, Kanno needs both sex and love. The Noburo-ya have thoughtfully given him a gorgeous young yakuza on whom he can slake his lust, but Kanno yearns to have his former lover, the enigmatic Hyung at his side. But Hyung is now a young soldier who is committed to the same institution Kanno was released from. Will Hyung and Kanno find happiness? Can a madman become a governor? Can Kanno destroy his former clan? Or will the strain of taking on so many burdens snap Kanno’s fragile grasp on reality? This story is a riveting and entertaining ride on the darkest of wild sides. Packed with hotness, smartness, humor, and daunting mind-altering surprises that dizzied my perception, I loved this story and gnashed my teeth at its end! I humbly implore the authors to revive Kanno from his mind-bending prison and let him ravish, slay, sex and love, with Hyung at his side, again and again. Exquisitely lovely, extremely provocative, devilishly haunting…and darn good fun! A must read, especially for those who love a good anti-hero!Thank you, Katsura and Yuramei, for stealing my heart yet again…. and leaving me with this marvelous yearning ache.“Smart, Hot, Deadly, and Poignant…like a great samurai should be!”

There is just one thing I want to add: there were times I wanted to stop reading, Kanno can be so cruel and heartless, so detestable that I can hardly tolerate him at times or bear to read another page but it is so worth it to do so! If you have moments where you wonder why you bought this book or wonder if you should forge ahead, I strongly encourage you to continue on. I feel the ending is more satisfying and intriguing than the previous two books in the series, so if you enjoyed those, I think you will be happy you stick with this one until the end even if it does feel a bit more demented and disturbing along the way.
