Bushrangers: Book Four

A novel from the Dragon-ghosts of Viscaya Universe

It’s the late 1870s in Australia, and while bushranger Jim Kelly hates the idea of shooting anyone, his boyfriend Mark Turner wants to pull a train heist, so Jim has to make a tough choice. Years ago, he fell unexpectedly in love with Mark, but now Mark wants to put innocent lives in danger so they can get enough money to run away together.

Unable to resolve their differences, they decide to go their separate ways, but soon realize they can’t stay away from each other. In the end their hasty reunion gets them in trouble with the law. Luckily Mark’s brother, Ramone, uses his diplomatic privilege to free them from prison. They flee for Europe, but during the harrowing sea journey Jim is caught between his love for Mark and the terrible realization that Mark and his brother might be a greater danger to him and the captain and crew of the vessel they sail on than anything they left behind.

I adore this series set in the late 1800's in Australia that tells the story of Jim and Mark. 'Taniwha Dreaming' is book four and picks right up where the last book ended. I will stress again that, in my opinion, these books really should be read in order, as there's way too much backstory for them to be read as stand-alones. There were serious revelations in the previous installment regarding Mark, and his heritage, as there are some serious mystical occurrences he seems capable of causing.Sometimes I wonder how Jim and Mark have stayed together this long. I mean, there's love, yes, but they're so different in the ways they view right and wrong. Mark will do anything he has to, including killing people, in order to get enough gold that he and Jim can leave the country and be free. Jim would rather none of the stuff they'd done had happened, and he's always upset about any injuries, or Mark even thinking about killing people. But Jim loves him, and vice versa."They’re troopers, Jim. Scum.”“Who made you judge, jury, and executioner? You’re talking about killing what, forty people? ‘Get rid of the troopers,’ you said! Like they’re vermin!”“Well they’re—”“They’re human beings! They’re living souls, Mark. I thought you were better than this.”Jim and Mark go their separate ways and are apart for months, until Jim realizes he does better with Mark, no matter what, so he sets out to find him. He finds him, but so do the troopers and they're hauled to Sydney to jail. Months in jail has them both convinced they're heading to the gallows until Ramon, Mark's brother, whom he didn't know of, tracks them down and gets them released. Now Jim and Mark are on their way to Spain which is where Mark's family is. A family he doesn't know as he was brought to Australia as a young child by Min Yong.Wow, Jack. I'm speechless. I can't believe the level to where you took Mark's genetic "quirks" to, and you've still left me with questions. You, sir, are a giant tease! You had better be planning another book, or I'll be showing up on your doorstep to harass you. An excellent story that I highly recommend!

Yup, I was smiling, I was back in the Outback with these guys, ready for their continuing adventures, as well as maybe some answers to some elements presented in the previous books in this series.Right off the bat, the dialogue reveals its easy rhythm, a steady flow that also works well in showing off Jim and Mark and their differing attitudes and shared feelings. It set things up for what was to come, in both conflict and compromise. This has an American West tone to it, thanks to the setting, circumstances, and many of the action scenes that take place. I love me a good Western, whether American or Aussie, and this fits the bill. The relationship between Jim and Mark is complicated by their individual imperfections, yet they feel perfect for each other. No matter where in history these two would find themselves, they’d find each other. Yeah, it’s that high level a love and intimacy and devotion they share. One of the larger conflicts between Jim and Mark is somewhat predictable. What makes it interesting is how this author uses it to further his exploration of these characters. The emotional impact is there and it put firmly into place what could be called the major theme of this book and the series: someone important to you, to your life, has the power to change you, and for the better if you let them. Jim and Mark have changed each other and now those changes are affecting their lives, the life they share, in big ways.I tend to stay away from declaring characters, or people for that matter, are destined to be together, but these two are. Not only are they recognizing that truth, they’re living it, it’s impacting their decisions and each thinks about the other while doing it. And it’s not portrayed as sickeningly sweet (you all know I don’t do the overly sweet), but instead as something very real, very alive, and very Jim & Mark.I love love love the twists in this story. Creative, unexpected, and simply cool, just like a good ol’ 180 should be. This is but one of the spokes turning the wheel of this story, serving it so well. With each passing page, I fell more and more in love with Jim and Mark. The paranormal elements hinted at in the previous books are finally brought to the forefront in this story. The various reactions to these by the different characters are the vessels on which the overall message of this book and series are fully realized: in being yourself, you can recognize the differences in others, realizing they are just like you because of those differences. On top of that, we get some answers, especially in regards to Mark and his family and past, as well as some unlikely alliances, and lots of plain ol’ fun.I enjoyed the heck outa this story and these characters. Any rare moment of awkward phrasing or overly explained detail was quickly swept aside by what was happening at that moment, in that scene. This was as close as one can get to “reading a movie” and I loved it.I also enjoy watching and experiencing an author’s marked progress in their storytelling abilities, and Jack Byrne is definitely demonstrating that here. The improved imagery and sense of place, extra crisp dialogue and focused plotlines – there wasn’t a slow point in the bunch – and the added layers of complexity to his characters, including Jim and Mark, all make for obvious growth and confidence. I love seeing that!* Originally reviewed for Prism Book Alliance®

Right, now I have that cleared up and out of the way, I can start to tell you just how much I LOVED this book. The author is new to me, so obviously I jumped at the chance to read something different, and different is the right word, although it’s not enough to explain how unique the world of The Devils Jawbone is. It’s almost as if you’ve stepped through the looking glass, but you’re in a parallel universe where you really need to be very, very careful what you wish for, and who you trust. Each story is unique in its concept, characters and overall theme, although there is an underlying theme of horror and suspense woven through. With each story being short, it would be easy to miss out the small details that you have the time to put into a longer story, but they are packed in here without losing anything.I was totally drawn into each story, and there were many twists and turns which, again with a limited amount of words is a real talent. There were moments of pure brilliance in each of the stories where I marvelled at the intricacy and depth of the emotions and feelings they brought out in those words.Devils Jawbone is not like any other town, and the people inhabiting it should beware, for those things that lurk in the dark and go bump in the night are the least of their worries. The dangers are real and live amongst them, interwoven into the fabric of the town so deep it would be impossible to remove it.The last story gave me a real ‘eureka’ moment and it the whole collection of stories took on a new angle for me, but I think everyone will get something different, which is the beauty of this book, even though when I did ask, my suspicion was neither confirmed or denied. This only means I will read again with a whole new, more experienced eyes.I have a high tolerance for horror and I will be honest, there was only one part that made me wince slightly, but there was nothing too graphic in my eyes with this, everything fit the story perfectly and was well placed. Be prepared for some jaw dropping moments when you will go, OMG did that really happen?!This is one author I am going to be adding to my favourites list, and definitely look forward to reading more from him.

I think BJ's passport bears many stamps from the border crossing station between the two. This collection blew my mind. At times while reading it I was one or all of the following; sure he's completely off his nut, convinced that he's a serial killer of the most gruesome persuasion, desperately wanting to be his BFF and live in his basement. Oh, and positive that he is a supersmart, brilliant beyond words rock star of a writer. Well, I already knew that.Devil's Jawbone is the kind of anthology that'll keep you up at night, afraid of every noise you hear. It'll make you cringe, cheer, cry, curse and cower in a corner. My favorites by the end (and as I read each story, IT became my favorite du jour) are Monsters Ball and Midnight in Eden, because, well... read 'em and find out.The combination of author B.J. Sheppard's wonderfully twisted sense of humor and warped depravity make for a great read. I have read all of BJ's work. I've edited most of it. He writes romance you want to believe in. He writes comedy that make you laugh til you cry, horror to rival any big name in the business. His ability to move between these sub-genres and to weave them together so seamlessly is what makes his work so compulsively readable. I can't wait to see what comes next. (Hopefully it has a little something to do with an e-zine reporter and his mail-Manny. Just sayin'.)

Note: no sex scenes. Only kissing. And it was really good. 99% of the books I read normally have steamy scenes in them: I swear, I didn't miss it bc everything was on point and a real page turner.

By quin@lg Cute short read with an unlikely pair.....woman is a mistress for 5 years to wealthy guy who comes across as a Prince charming...promising to leave his equally wealthy wife of 15 years..mistress then lies and say she's pregnant because she's desperate..that lie ended up being the one thing that could end her life or it may just save her life...under the surface has a surprising twist..pick it up....I would give it more stars if it was a little longer.

I liked that the story got my attention from the first page. It took Riley a long time to catch on to what Malcolm was trying to warn her about with regard to Sean. She got there in the end.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent read. Jaw dropping ending! By deb I really, really liked this book. I loved the characters and the way that Sam and Joe connected. I just really want to hang with them. I really felt like I was in Palm Springs dealing with the heat as well. There are SO many secrets going on in this book. It's amazing how the author is able to piece them all together. And how everyone becomes a suspect and the one you least suspect, of course, is the one who did it. And then you find out that people are not who they seem to be and that they are either someone else or are doing other jobs that what you thought. It's a highly perplexing puzzle that kept me intrigued from the very beginning until the very end. Even towards the end, when some of the pieces are being thrown out, I still didn't figure out where the heck they went and what was going on. Of course, the final answers do take several pages to tell, so I don't feel that bad not figuring it out. Plus, who wants to be able to figure everything out. I want to be surprised and have my jaw dropped.Anyway, I would like to thank Diversion Books and Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this highly entertaining and enjoyable e-galley in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this book!

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Deadline By S Riaz This is the first in a new series, featuring investigative reporter Samantha Perry. Wanting to get away from the murder beat as crime reporter for the LA Times, Sam has moved to Palm Springs. Having written several books on high profile cases, money for the movie rights of her latest books has helped her become financially secure and she enjoys life at the quieter, “Weekender,” newspaper, run by her old editor. So, when she is called about a body being found in the desert, at first she is unwilling to cover the case – however, old habits die hard and soon Sam finds her old skills being called into use.Jeff Rydell was a drifter, who is found beaten and murdered. He had been volunteering for the campaign to elect actress Ellen Konrad elected as mayor and Sam is soon intrigued by both the case and Ellen herself. Along with her old friend, Joe Sapone, who comes for a visit, Sam begins to investigate why a man who seemed to be liked was found so brutally murdered. This fast paced novel takes us from past secrets, through possible links to drugs, politics and nightclubs. As the first in a series, this sets the scene very well. I had a great sense of the place that Sam has made her home and liked the peripheral characters, which helped flesh out the storyline. At times, I felt that Sam’s investigative powers were a little over played – there were at least two occasions where she found evidence before the police and that seemed unlikely. However, generally the characters and storyline were believable and well written. If you like mysteries with a strong female character, then you should find this an enjoyable read. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

I DO love mysteries with strong female lead with a lesbian twist. The writer captured the essence of Palm Springs, including the heat and the picturesque mountain views! Sam Perry's accomplished, relentless and "normal" character etched an imaginary friendship with me. The story was gripping that I was excited to continue where I left off. Nothing was predictable. Tastefully done. K. A. Tracy did a fine job with this one.
